July 17-24, 1853

The 17: “came to meeting (?) at Sharon with B. Upc(hurch?)-a good many pers.-J. 
W. (John White?)preached first-Text-I will turn my hands to the little ones-C. 
C. White preached-came home-no one at home-very warm-I put on some more close & 
went to J. Fargason’s- G. W. W. was there with Ma. F. when I got there-we 
enjoyed ourselves extremely well-ther was me, F 2 daughters & Ann O.(O’Dell?)-
G. W. W.-we stade nearly all the eve-we both came off together-we had a long 
chat for 1 hour-I recon I wa(l)ked with him-he dismounted & just took it old 
field fashion-all of our chatting so much was about 1...[coded passage*]…while 
we was talking-we gave each other an introduction of each others friendship for 
each other-that is we was courting(?)..”.

The 18th: “I heard for sertain that J. Stroud & E. Martin was married-me W. W. 
Ma & An(?)H. & E. O. went to peach orched-pain in the stomach”.

The 21st: “…meeting at Mt. B. but did not go-but was(sorry?)afterwards”.

The 23rd: “I want to go to Sardis today if I can get a horse-so after breakfast 
I went to store thence to A. J. A.(Ammons)-(he)was not at home-so I give it out-
just stade about all day”.

The 24th: “I shaved then went again to Mr. A.-so I got a horse to ride-I came & 
put on my close(double entry)went to Mr. O.s & went with M. J. by J. H.(James 
Hooten’s?)on to Sardis-a good many out-C. C. W. Pr.-we went home with G. W. W.  
stade till 3 ocl.-went after some mellons-came to the house-then to the 
Presbyterian church_Stevens preached- Text 9 C. of the Acts of the apoles
(apostles)-I came home with M. J. S short time-G. W. W. came by so I came on 
with him(to)store-then I went to Mr. A.’s to cary(?)his…”.

*This passage was the first of several coded entries. James used two different 
codes in the diary. This numerical one was easily deciphered, and most passages 
were innocuous. The second code may be a form of shorthand, was in tiny script, 
and was beyond me. I will not try to “translate” either here. I will instead 
insert (code) in future incidences.
