KNOWLES, 1852-1858 (page 25 of 137) July 24-30, 1853 The 24th continued: “…beast home-stade at short time to S. O. where G. W. W. was and stade all night with him-for at (t)his time had rather be with him than any other person on earth-I beleave”. The 25th: “got up came home-ate breakfast-came to school…he(Mr. Hilsman)gave me a solicitation to Mr. Reeve’s examination & c.”. The 26th “…came to the school house sed two lessons-then at 9 o’clock I went to the house-put on my close and went to the examination o Mr. Reeves-there was not a great many person there-the day was unfavorable-mist of rain and we was out of doors-when I arrived Mr. R. saluted me then came to me as a friend-in the eve heard the boys speak their speaches-some fine ones-went to the widow James-lodged at night”. The 27th: “came back to the examination all day-in the afternoon the pupils all spoke-red compositions(?)-at first the small ones & then J. & Je(?)W., W. & B. James, Thos. H., J. W., A. R., & G. W. W. spoke-all very good-B. J. excelled all-a very pretty day-at night a candy(?) party-I was requested to stay-after it was over I came be J.(John?)Hunt’s to W. H. with his daughter-went back to Hunt’s all night-10 o’clock..”. The 28th: “as soon as I got up-came on-it was raining…looks like we are going to have a wet spell-our teacher told us to hear & see a great deal but say but little”. The 29th: “…to store bot.(this was bought-is writen bot. for short)a book called Watts Treat(ise?)on the Mind-50Ë” The 30th: “foggy this mo.-today is the day for the selebration of the sons of temperance-I expect to be here-came off-a good many person here-some very good speaches-E.
