KNOWLES, 1852-1858 (page 27 of 137) August 8-11, 1853 The 8th continued: “..(to)..get religion and want to join the church-11 Ocl. Preaching went up for prayr-then afternoon went to the grove to pray-came back- 3 Ocl. I went up again-I felt some releaf between 3 Ocl. preaching & night-me & E. D. O., Henry Lewis, R. Phillips went to the silent grove-we came to &(an) old log-all three praid for me-came back-C. C. W. came to me and talked(to)with me-so at night I ventured to go up & joined the church at Sardis which was near by ther-5 miles from where I lived-I was all the one that joined that night-the preacher never asked any person whether they would take me as a member or no (t?)-he said he would-I recon there was one hundred gave me the right hand for fellowship-all appeared pleased with my mode of opp(operandi?)randi-we went to the tent-Malone came to F. M. Hail’s tent where I was a that time-he talked 1 hour to me & others-I recon then me, G. W. W., Mr., Mrs. Reeves and T. Harrison went to W. W. tent(Welsey Welch?)-stade the ballens of the night”. The 9th: “…all went to the stand-prayr meeting-all prepared to go(to) the water- at 8 Ocl. we all went to the stand-then to the water-old Mr. Sims led me to the water and from it to (the)tent-then we was for coming home-Wesley W.(Welch) started-G. W. W. with me to Dr. Bryans*-James Hooten was there with his wagon after (for)B. G. H.’s family-but they got some one else to bring them-I bid him (G. W. W.?)fare well-he told me to remember him-came on with Mr. Hoot(en?)-I came to school in the afternoon…”. The 11th: “warm-I went and stade all night with(D. E.-?)at J. Fargasons’. ______________________________ *Dr. Bryans probably lived near the Key’s Ferry/Fincherville road junction; this would indicate that the campground was east or south of there, perhaps at the first site of Sardis Baptist Church-nearer Worthville on landlot #230/8D. The church moved to its present site in 1843, when James Noles Sr, deeded two acres to the church deacons.
