August 12-16, 1853

The 12th: “came to the academy-all well with me today-I have today thought a 
great deal about trying to serve God-as just las(t) Tuesday was berried(?)in 
the liquard(?)grave by
C. C. White-it is my intention to try to serve the better as though(?) (he)has 
dun a great for me”.

The 13th: “…came to the acdy.(?)-to commense writing off a play for myself-but 
I am going to try to get out of it-Mr. H.(Hilsman?)& L. H. T.* came-they got me 
to go to Mr. H.(Hooks?)for to get a nuse paper-rode L. H. T. mar(e)-came back-
met them at the store-today he is to sell J. F.’s(John Fargason’s?)property & 
had me to clerk at the sale-no chance to get round it-so I came to the 
resolution to try to perform every duty that was involved upon me-so I done 
tolerable well-I have just returned-went to Wm. T. T. ate supper-then came back-
no body at home-Mrs. & Miss H.(Hooks?) a(at?)S. T.-a halo around the moon-there 
was never such an excitement in this county about Pol.(politics)as at the 
present”.

The 14th: “Mr. & Mrs. H. went to L. C.(Crowell?)left me and Mat(?)& S. T.-I 
went to Mr. O.s stade all day-started to J. C.(John Childress?)me & M. J. O.
(O’Dell)-saw him on the way-so we came back ate din.-afternoon a while M. J. 
went of(f)-I then stade with J. A. M. -so I spent the very warm day”.

The 16th: “I just beleave that God enlitens mind on sients(science ?)as I asked 
him to do… afternoon I threw a peachstone at a chicken in the acdy. which Mr. 
Hilsman did not like & said I must not do that any more-I did hate(e) that for 
I always wanted to please him-but it was then two late-but I will try to do 
better-for the time to come…”.

*Levi H. Turner was the sheriff of Henry Co. during this span. There may be 
records of this civil matter in the courthouse. It appeared to involve both 
John Fargason & Soloman O’Dell.
