KNOWLES, 1852-1858 (page 29 of 137) August 17-26, 1853 The 18th: “I came to the acdy.-next was Mariah H.(Hilsman)-we had a chat about G. W. W.”. The 20th: “came to the A. wrote this-then went to house-put on my close with my mind undecided where I would go to meeting-whether to the Island Shoals or to Sharon(?)- but finally started to I .S. with C. D. H.(Hooks)-when I got to Mr. O.s(O’Dell’s)we met Mr. A. J. A.(Ammons)goin to town-I asked him if he was going by him self-he said yes if I would not go with him-I told him I would if he had no objection-so we went-enjoyed ourselves very well-Calahan & Tombs spoke-a good many there-came home all gon-went to S. O.s (all night?)’’ The 21st: “I went to A. J. A.s-got a mule for to go to Sha(ron ?)myself & Coldman-came to the store & so many had past(ed) during the morning going to see W. Hester beried-I went to his funerel-was preached at the S. S.(Snapping Shoals?)by I.(J.?)Michal(?)-he was beried under the form of the mason(s)-he was the first I ever saw beried in the form-I recon there was 300(500?)people there- about 90 masons-I then went home with J. Gray* as M. S. sliled(?-code)-& came to meeting I. S.- I. M. preached bab(tized?)some(?)others immersed-then came back to Mr. A.s-lodged at night-I will write some more about this day-M. preached at s. s. as I stated-text 9C. 2tV. of Hebrews….(?)…it is once appointed (?) for man to die.” The 25th: “I wrote two letters-one to Lee Bates-the other to Uncle Joe”. The 26th: “…I saw a comit in the west-it was the first I ever saw-in the eve received a letter from sister E.(Elizabeth)and Abner(Knowles-likely a cousin)- all was well-I went..”. _________________________ * J.
