KNOWLES, 1852-1858 (page 31 of 137) September 2-10, 1853 The 2nd continued: “after the examination I went to J. E. B.s for some mellons- came back-stade with M. J. O.(O’Dell)”. The 3rd: “came here where they was working on the academy-when I went to diner B. G. H. told me that he was going to move to the S. Shoals-so I would have to go somewhere else for to board-S. T. & Ma. T. is here & want me to go and stay with them-but Mr. & Mrs. H. are here by them selves-I stade with them…”. The 4th: “we started to meeting Mt. B.-stoped at J. E. B.s-ate some mellons- went on to church-a good many person there-S. O. preached-Text, The word killeth the spirit quicketh-came back to J. E. B.s ate diner-then came on to the A.-Mr. H.(Hilsman)gave us a lecture on the deauty of parents-a good many people here-it was a good thing but some did not like it”. The 6th: “not many(pupils)-this evening I went to T. H. B.(Thomas H. Bryans)-I found them very fine people-came to school’. The 7th: “…went home with J. A. McMullan(?)”. The 8th: “in the evening school was dismissed until Mo.(Monday?)-after school was dismissed I wrote a letter to my father-I saw Mr. A.(Ammons)-(he)said he would board me” The 9th: “H.’s family is gon to camp meeting…I went to the store and waited for the arrival of the mail-received a letter from U. Joe ala jail-he was well and want ted help in his distress-L. Crowell came to H.s-went in the house but when I arrived was gon-I went to J. C.(Childress?)to see if they was there-not there- I then went to W. T. T.s-then to the store-then back all nite at W. T. T.s….”.
