KNOWLES, 1852-1858 (page 34 of 137) September 28 to October 11, 1853 The 28th: "commensed setting down sums in algebra The 29th: "meting at Mt. B. but did not go"' Sept. 1st: "...came to the A. then to W.(?)T. T.s-to read a letter-then went to the store-came to dinner-came by the A.-went with M. J. O. to J. McDonels gin- came back". The 2nd: "...went to church-Mr. O. preached-text 6C 2V of the Acts-came home went to J. Childress to see John Lewis-saw him came back to Mr. O.-then came to the A.-I saw A. J. A.(Ammons)asked him if he was going to m[McDonough?-between lines-"but T. H. B (Bryans)was..."evidently going with him]". The 3rd: "went to the store as there was no school till dinner(?)-came to A. - A. A. Spear* told me I was(due)to them-$1.80...I saw him(A. J. A.)he said he wanted me to go with him but had promise(d) T. H. B.". The 4th: "...I went to W. T. T.s all night-H.s(Hooks)was all gon to G.(?)C.s- stade all today-we all went to the store-a some(sum)proposed to be worke(d)-I will not state it here-it is in some of my works by the name of the Bowden sum". The 7th: "at school till noon-Mr. H.(Hilsman)went to Covington-H.(Hooks)at L. C, (Crowell?)-all night at Mr. O.-then came here". The 8th: "at court till noon then went to E. C.s (my?)-as their child was very sick-then for Dr. Bryans-he was not at home-went back left word for him to come- sat up all night me, Mrs. Tarbus H.s daughter & Mrs Crowell her sister". The 9th: "in the morning the Dr. came-the child dide(?)at 9 O'clock-stade a while came to W. Cr. his fa(father?)-in the eve came to Mr. O.s-lodged at night". The 11th: "tomorrow(I will)work the road if nothing happens at school-L. M. Fargason (move?was stoped & part of his (???)...". _________________ *A. A. Spears may have been the son of W. H. Spiers(?)who ran the Bersheba community store. Local stores were often the sites for Justice of the Peace courts and Post Offices.
