September 10-18, 1853

The 10th continued: “…raining all day-in the eve went to the store-all the eve 
stade with M. J. O.(O’Dell)”.

The 11th: “still raining-ate diner with R. Alexander which is nearby-then went 
to the river in I. J. H.’s hammock(?)-thence up the river-stade-came back to R. 
A.’s till night-then to W. T. T’s lodged till morning-came to school-went there 
for dinner-19 scholars-I went to the store bot. a chemistry($-?)-came down-Hs 
returned from camp meeting”

The 14th “…wrote a letter to Pa”.

The 15th: “at school-eve went to the store to put a letter in the office-
meeting going on at Mt. B….”

The 17th: “this morning when I arose I came to the A.-red the 44 psalm & tryed 
to pray...seek religion is my prayr(?)-went to S. S.(Sabbath school?)-after 
reading 18 of Luke he prayed (? ? ?) Mr. O. preached 1V of 2 C. of H(?)-in the 
eve Joshua G. Pain preached- Text 45C 9V-we (???) that man that strives against 
his make(r)-call(ed on)me (for)some passages(?)-as we came off old mother 
Harper told me she had p(r)ayed for me often & said she(?)beleaved her prayr 
was or had been answered & she also said that she was happy when she heard that 
I had joined the church".

The 18th: "I went to church P.(prayer)meeting-in the mor. 9 O'cl S. S.(S. Smith-
see error above)red the 34 psalm-then S. O. then red a hymn-B. M.(N.?)of 
McDonough prayed then Smith gave a lecture(?)..."
