KNOWLES, 1852-1858 (page 38 of 137) November 8-11, 1853 The 8th continued: "I went down with them for to get some books-then went to Mr. A. J. A.s-him & D. L. C. came home from Snapping Shoals-we ate dinner- myself & C. went to the store-I went to the school H.-made a picture of a (girl?)-went home by the store-road horsback behind D.(?)L. C.". The 9th: "me and C. got up-it was raining-a very bad morning-after breakfast we came to the school H.-where they was acting their plays-Wm. B.(Brewer?)pladed(?) the fiddle(?)-zI drew the curtains-it blew off cold-we went to dinner-w(h)ent to home-as it was my home now-all night". The 10th: "this morning I went to examination-C. went to Mr. H.s after his daughters-he broat them to the A.-then home-I was at (t)he exa.(examination?)- this is the last day of the school and tonight is the last night of the exhibition-a good many people-all broakup and went and went of(f)-myself and Mr. H.s(?)and A. J. McMullan(stayed) till all was still-then we broke(?)up-I went to Mr. A.s-L. H. G. Turner was there-(and)W. B.A.(Ammons) & family...". The 11th: "D. L. C. this morning moved-I hope him off-then I went with him to the store-then we went on to the school house-we stoped at the school house- then I went on to B. G. H.s old house that he had left-he came by-I came out bade him farewell(he is going to marry Sabbath morning)-I came to the school house-went on to the store with Mr. H.(Hilsman)-he gave me a sertifficante(?- certificate)to care(carry)to my father-went to Mr. 1 J. 1.s(A. J.* Ammons)- Barton(W. Barton Ammons?)was there-I overtook T. H. B. (Bryans)at W. T. T. went on with him-ate dinner-then caught hors(e)and went to the sto(re?)-me T. H. B together-me and Mr. 1 J.A. went home-then to the plantation-pl with stand for plantation in this work-where his hands(slaves)was picking out cotton-came back all night(here?)". ___________________________ *The use of "1" for Mr. Ammons-James often referred to Ammons as "Mr. 1".
