KNOWLES, 1852-1858 (page 64 of 137) December 17-23, 1854 The 17th: "After breakfast G. D. W.(Whitfield)came to see(to) (see) my Pa as they both was about to sell there land together to Mr. Harris-as Pa then had an offer[for]selling his he did not wish to wate as long as H. wished-(?)he told my?)father that R. had sold on yestody-so directly G. R. came by going to look at some land-R., Pa. & W. went with him- Mr. R. asked me to go-I answered him kindly I did not wish to go-he said stay at home then-I did-enjoyed myself finely-at or about noon[they?]came back-[in]the eve went with my father to G. B.s(?) then to N.(?)R.s-he was a little better-came back-very (?)'. The 18th: "When I awoke it was raining & very cloudy all the morning-but did not much rain-very pleasan(t)for the season-in eve me & Pa went to G. N.(?) Bryans to see Denby if he would work for him[Pa.]a while-turned cold cl(cleared (?)off-he was looking for Y.(Young?)to come to by his land". The 19th: "cold-in the eve P.(picked)some cotton-in the eve a tremd(ous?)fire in the woods near by-very dry & windy-as we had but little rain sens August(?)". The 21st: "at home-in eve me & Pa started to G. D. W.s-met him going to S. mill- we came there with him-came home". The 22nd: "very smokey as the wood(s)was all on fire-& when this is the case it is so smokey that (? ? ?) can not see 50 yards from (?)-but pleasant-at one Ocl. came here to the pon(d?)-(which was near by)-cloudy & looks like for rain nearby-every nig(ht)sense I came home I have drempt(?)something about Mr. 1 & long to see him-I feel happy". The 23rd: "cloudy-we went to court [in] Warwick-a good many persons-at about 1 the mail arrived...".
