KNOWLES, 1852-1858 (page 98 of 137) May 11-25, 1856 The 11th continued: "..& to Hamp. horse B.(back)-he was not at home-came home-I am about half in the blews". The 12th: "went to school-came home-his Ma here". The 13th: "They went home with her-came home in eve-I have had but few words to say to him since Sunday because he hurt my (f)ealings-(was hurt by saying a Sunday night after I had (lay?) down-he told J. R. that he did not like to see one man take up & become very intermit-(intimate) & fond of another-I took it for I had been(for the last three years) very much so & love him as a brother and above all others on earth & I cannot help it-he is nearly always so k (ind?)". The 14th: "He left for Atlanta-although I had but little to say-(Mr. 1 told me farewell- (I) wrote a letter to W. A.(Winney?)Stal(l)sworth-a young widdow". The 16th: "rain-went to school-then to S.(?)T.s-came back to school till 1/2 after 11 Ocl.-came home-in eve I went fishing-by self-3 fish-came home". The 17th: "sent of(f) said letter-Mr. 1 is not yet returned". The 18th: "I went to store-he came-I came home then with him-then we went to meeting-came home-then went to Pl.-some rain". The 19th: "Rain in (in)morn.-then went to meet(ing)-came home-in eve me & Mr. 1 went to river". The 20th: "At school-Barton & P.(Pleasant?)B. Turner came to go fishing tomorrow". The 21st: "they went". The 24th: "We went fishing-came home at noon-some rain-here all eve-J. R. Went to Bartons- [very long coded passage] -I told him what I was in the blews about- which was this-I heard him say that he did not like to- refer (?-T. 13th)". The 25th: "went to S. School-came home-all eve by self-When he came-he told me that the (w)idow Stallsworth(?) was in the Sardis settlement".
