KNOWLES, 1852-1858 (page 101 of 137) July 5-26, 1856 The 5th: "myself Mr. & Mrs. 1 & his ma went to Pl.-we went in washing-came home- in eve he went to carry his ma home-I went to Dr. Curry's-obtained two books- home(?)". The 6th: "We went to church-I. H. Bryans came home with us-Copland came-I went with I. H. to Hamp's-he was not at home-I came back-at night [coded words]". The 7th: "34 scholars-I feel very bad all this week-dry(?) wind(?) warm-I wrote a letter to Pa". The 12th: "we went with Cop. fishing or (to) F. baskets-he came on-we stade a while-I wanted him to go back to river & go in washing-he would not-I thought he might of went as he asked Copl. for us all to go in-came on home-then to store to court-a good shower-came home all eve". The 13th: "After walking round I went to Turners to meet(ing)-from thence to Barton's all eve-J. J. T.(?) [perhaps Turner] & wife there-Widdow Lile & Tarply there-I came home". The 17th: "Barton came down-in eve we went to Fish Baskets". The 18th: "they went to S. Shoals-I hope (helped)them harness horses & expected to go as far as store with them-but they left me-Mr. 1 in eve made apology for doing so-in eve as they went home-we came with them to store-they left". The 19th: "we went to river in washin(g)-came home to meeting-came back-in eve I. H. Bryans & wife came- [above line: "all night"]". The 20th: "Th(e)y left-I went to church-he came by self-we came home-Mr. & Mrs. 1 went to J. Bryans-then he went to church-I was there-C. C. White preached to negroes". The 21st: "we all went from school to church". The 25th: "Raining-came to school-13 schollars-received a letter from L. H. G. Turner". The 26th: "We went to Pl.-looked threw his crop-he would not go in washing-came home to store-came back-T. H. B...".
