KNOWLES, 1852-1858(page 117 of 137) February 5-14, 1857 The 5th continued: "..I came to Worthville-Dr. Bryans is to board me & horse-I am to help his clerk-and ride for him some to collect-all other times I am to read Med-I-Son & c.-I feel some better satisfied than I did the first days-I hope I will become better satisfied". The 7th: "I saw Dr. Sims & Huson (?) I will (be?) here all the week*-Friday night there was ball in Jackson & c.". The 14th: "in morning I was preparing to go back to Bersheba and Sharon-when I got to Ber. I had my horse shod before Mr. 1 came- [he]just spoke when I came up to him-then we passed a few words-then he left- [I left in a] few minutes and overtook him near the old man Jacksons-went on with him to meeting-when conferance came off or was threw- I left-came to Bersheba-got my horse shod behind-then I went by Mr. 1s as if I was going to S. Sho(als)-but when I got to a branch by McGraws I stoped and set out on my return-came to Mr. 1's-I did not no (know)whether to go in or not-as he did not ask me to come-which I thought he should-but I went in and stade a few minutes-I then left-(he was not there) and said there was a probable of me returning at night-I went to my pl. and just about sun down I came back-brot. (brought)some plows from shop and a rope I had borrowed from him when I arrived-but when I arrived Ben & E. J. Fargason was there-which I did not like-for I wanted to have some private conversation with (with)him about how he was doing towards me-I hesitated whether to stay or not-as I had promise(d) to go to J. B.s tonight-but directly I concluded to stay-B. & E. stade till bed time.." _____________________________ * James lived in the doctor's office in the village of Worthville.
