KNOWLES, Sr.& Lucy THOMAS (who married in Greene Co., GA 09 FEB 1823). He spent his first seventeen years there. In December 1850, his father, James Knowles Sr., moved the small family to Dooly Co. in South Georgia. In the fall of 1852, young James returned to Henry Co. where he attended a "writing school" at Sardis Baptist Church. In January 1853 he started school in the Bersheba community at the O'Dell Academy, under Mr. James Hilsman, boarding with the Berry G. Hooks family. The school was sponsored by Methodist minister, Soloman O'Dell. James Knowles completed two years under Mr. Hilsman. In late 1854, while visiting in Dooly Co., James learned that his teacher had been killed, and was asked to return to Henry Co., to teach! In January 1855 he began his teaching career at O'Dell. He taught for two years at O'Dell, in Bersheba, Henry Co., GA, but in the fall of 1856 his "contract" was not renewed. After a visiting his family in Dooly Co. James began an apprenticeship with Dr. James H. Bryans in Worthville, in adjoining Butts Co. In Nov.1857 he enrolled at the University of Nashville- Medical Department. After completing that initial coarse in February 1858, he returned to Worthville and Dr. Bryans. He later graduated from the University of Louisiana-1859. He married Lavonia Catherine "Katie" Williamson in Butts Co. 05 Nov. 1859. He lived, and established his own practice, near the intersection of Keys Ferry and Stroud roads in Henry Co. His home was on the site of the later Noah Cowan place; his office across Keys Ferry Rd.(southside). He died here September 26, 1865. He is buried in Butts Co. in the Williamson/Knowles family cemetery. Additional Comments: [Many facts were found in the "Journal of James B.
