GA In this 1980s photo, Bernard F. Knowles-late of Conyers, stands in front of this long neglected cemetery. Just to his right, the only marked graves were; R. R. Maddox, 1837-1913, and his son George, 1866-1869. In the late 1990s the cemetery was cleared following a dispute with the landowner, and new stones were placed for Rueben J. Harper, 1815-1895, and his wife Martha Carter Harper, 1821-1873, by members of the Folds family, Harper descendants. Martha Carter was the daughter of Daniel and Martha(Scott)Carter who had married in Warren Co. In 1844, Martha Harper and her brother Leonidas Daniel Carter were deeded portions of the original land lot won by their father-in the Georgia land lottery, by their uncle, Rev. James Carter of Butts Co. James Carter, a long time pastor at Macedonia Baptist Church, had purchased the lot when Daniel Carter had defaulted on taxes. In the early 1900s, Alexander Carter, son of Leonidas and Priscilla(Nelms)Carter-who married in 1852, told of helping build a rock wall around the cemetery. It is likely that his parents were buried in that enclosure near Rueben and Martha Harper, and Rueben‘s sister, Frances. Rueben Harper & Leonidas Carter were double brothers-in-law; Leonidas having first married Rueben’s sister, France Ann in 1850. For more see the Carter biography on this site.
