Houston COUNTY GA Cemetery Evergreen (African-American) File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by lavoris@bellsouth.net Gail Maiden http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/houston/cemeteries/ever.txt EVERGREEN CEMETERY (African-American Section only) Compiled March 11, 2001 Location: In East Perry Georgia on Main Street near the bridge that crosses Big Indian Creek. Latitude 322716N Longitude 0834404W The graves of slaves, ex-slaves and freed man are buried here along with the white houstonians of yesteryears. These graves are located - facing the cemetery on the far right side of the stone monument entrance. There is a dirt road that’s almost invisible that divides the graves of the white Houstonians from the African-American Houstonians. These African-American graves are within the area - from the almost invisible dirt road to the bank of the creek (Believe some graves have been washed away over the years due to the corroding of the bank). These graves continue all the way to the back of the cemetery where the fence marks off the business on the other side. (This is where I began recording). Unfortunately these graves are not considered part of the Evergreen Cemetery, even though they share the same ground and have shared this ground over the past 120 or so years if not since 1827. A surveyor(s) only recorded the graves of the white Houstonians buried there. This is one of the oldest cemeteries in Perry, Georgia. The oldest African American grave that is legible has a death date of 1886 – Ms. Mahalia Dennard. (** - denotes my personal notes) Taking the (dirt) road all the way to the back of the cemetery to the fence – starting with the first row from left to right: (I recorded all information legible, there are many graves with no dates or with dates that are not legible).
