Curl & Williams family collection (Lenoir Co., NC) Jones County, NC Enoch Noble Collection Letter from Dempsey BROWN of Houston Co., GA to Cousin Enoch NOBLE of Jones Co., NC 31 May 1846 Georgia, Houston County May 31, 1846 Mr. Enoch NOBLE, Dear Cousin, I received your letter yesterday bearing date the 10th of April & the 17th of this inst. which gave me great pleasure to hear from you, it is the first letter that I have had from you in some years & I hope you will not neglect to long any more, I am happy to hear of the good health of your family, my family are all in reasonable good health. Brother Williams & family, Brother Stephen & family, sister Nancy & family are all well and all the connection so far as I know, we are in want of Rain on our crops at this time vary much. I have just finished yesterday getting up my wheat & have thrashed out about half of it. I think that I shall make 500 Bushels or more, our corn & cotton crops look only tolerable. I expect to commence laying by in about one week, the Commercial Bank in Macon has failed last week, they failed to open their doors last Tuesday morning, fortunately I had none of it, Stephen had $5, R. JOHNSON had $10, D. COBY $90 & J. KING $500, then on all that I know of as yet the loose? by the Bank, but there are many whom must suffer a great deal for then has been a great quantity of that money paid for cotton during the past cotton season, as such the money is in the country & some persons must loose it you say you have been so cat? hail? you only that one Hundred Dollars which will lose by Jas. B. SHINE & that won't ruin you to kick it off & go a head you speak of coming to Georgia but that your wife is not willing to come. I am fearful that you have not got your own consent to come. I think that cousin of mine, that is your wife will be ready to come as soon as you will. I should be much pleased to see you and your wife in Georgia but I fear I never shall see that sight, as to say to you at this time where you could buy good land I don't know though. I have not doubt but you can buy good land in this section of the country, this is not the time of your to hear of much land being offered. I should like to visit N. Carolina one time more but I fear I never shall. There are many old friends & Relations whom I should like to see but I can't stand the fatigue of traveling, my health is as good as it has been in ten years or perhaps more but old age is creeping on. to Ride on Horse Back or to work a little or take much Exercise in any way I fail. I keep promising myself that I will live a lazy life but some how or other I can't do it, as I get older my family gets larger, my children growing up and they are to look & provide for Educate -if you will come to Georgia I will help you to hunt a place there will be a plenty of land for sale after a little there are many who spoke o moving to the west of Louisiana, Texas & these Polk? men you know will soon have the Texas war to an end agreeable to their promise two years ago a great many of them said if there was any fighting to do that they would do it they didn't want the whigs to help things, I see you call your son Enoch you be fearful that he is the last my wife has had ten? children and I have not named one Dempsey yet I thought I would wait till towards the last and then give my name old man James COOMBS Departed this life a few weeks since, none other of your cousins? is that I know at present, are have a small of Rain this Evening hoping we shall have more. Samuel HOTTEN who lives near me has a cancer most on his face which must take his life in a short time unless he gets Relief the most of his neighbors think it will certainly kill him he is offering $500 to any one who will cure him as I have understood. I saw him today & I assure you it is the worst sight I ever saw. I Expect you saw the man when you was here he hunted with us sometimes relives on west of me. The friends which you mention in your letter are all getting along vary well I think Except B. F. PRICE as I have understood he is not doing well he is likely to loose his property, I would like to know the prime cause of Jas. B. SHINE'S failing so badly he has always appeared to cut a wide through and make money hand over hand. O I like to forgot if you thought of coming to Georgia why didn't you let you things that was here stay they would not put you to so much trouble I find? you won't me there is a great chance here to make turpentine you ought to bring enough with you that understands it to start a distillery then you could make the money, Monday night 1st July? as I am going to Hawkinsville tomorrow I will finish this letter tonight and mail these tomorrow though you Direct your letters Hayneville we have had a light shown this Evening but still in great want a part of my corn looks like it was Ruined for the want of Rain, Excuse my short letter I will try and be more lengthy in my next if you will answer this. I have wondered at your not writing more & I suppose the Reason has been that you had not time please take time here after. In I close by sadly? myself as your true cousin till most?
