Curl & Williams Family Collection (Lenoir Co., NC) Jones County, NC Enoch Noble Collection Letter from William H. BROWN to Enoch NOBLE 19 Sept. 1844 Houston County, Georgia Sept. 19th, 1844 Dearest Relation, Having received your letter a few days since and finding you in good health afforded us much joy. Father’s Uncle Dempsey and Uncle Stephen’s families are in very good health at the present. The people in Houston, Macon and Dooley Counties have had great deal of sickness in them for last two or three months past. Bait deaths are not so common. The general size that died were mostly small children from two or three years of age to six or seven. The people in and around here have been so sickly that the Doctor has been riding both night and day for a while past. Some plantations have had from nineteen to twenty sick at a time, but I believe they are all well again. The crops in this part of country are generally good for corn. I have no complaint about it now. Cotton is about the same thing some have good crops and others have not. It is selling from $5 1/2 to 6 and some. There has not been very much carried into market yet as I learn. Some think cotton will be as good as it was last year and others the contrary. I am now going to school at the same old ground only we have a new seaderny? and another Teacher by the name Thomas S. Layles? he was born in New York. My studies at the present are Latin, History, Mythology, Latin Syntax, Proper Essay, besides some other smaller ones I have in operation. I did not go to school last year but I went year before last at the place. I am going now with brother Frances, Caroline, and Eleanor. We have from thirty to forty students when all are present. We do not have as much Ralling snakes as we are use to as you termed it. I should like to see you resting your bones upon the fertile lands of Georgia and I could relate to you something more than I can by way of letter. There was a wedding last Thursday night at cousin Richard WESTBROOKS. The bride was his wife’s sister to Mr. Austin STEWART. He gave them a splendid supper. There was suppose to be about three or four hundred at it. This neighborhood has changed considerable since you departed from its borders. Some of the people are married some moved away some died and soon till they have separated very much since you witnessed it with your own eyes. Henderson is still rising it has within in its limits five dwelling two stores one church one academy and is going to be put up before the year expires two more dwelling houses and another church. Others speak of wanting to settle in it but they have not come to the conclusion of doing so. Religion has been spreading itself a great deal here. My father, mother, sister Penelope, Uncle Stephen, cousin Frederich BRYAN and myself was baptized not many weeks ago. I saw Dempsey SMALL last Sunday and he said he and wife was well. Green COX is living? father yet. Mr. PRICE is married and teaching school near Houston Campground. I cannot tell you much at this time but I will hasten through. Richard PRESCOTT is employed at our house now. He told me to say to you he was building a gin house because you was not here to do the same work. He said he did not want you to stay and court the old widows to come along to Georgia and marry a girl. Sister Penelope told me to say to you in this letter to giver her respects to Sarah S. HUGGING and tell her to write a letter to her old friend whom she so much use to male with through their young days. Do cousin give my respects to your nieces though I never saw them it would afford me great pleasure to spend a few ideas with them before death shall take me away (corner folded) HUGGING I have not forgotten him yet but I want him to write to me so I can get the news from Carolina oftener. Tell Jeremiah PARSONS to write to me also. If there are any whom you think I or any the family would to write tell them to do so if you please for I am glad to hear from there anytime. Tell me if you ever write when you are going to land yourself at this place. Write whenever opportunity presents itself and tell your nieces to write also. We hear from you so seldom part the time we do not know whether you are dead or alive. Excuse all deficiencies if you please. I still remain your most affectionate cousin till death. Yours respectfully, William H.
