Though tears fell hot and heavily from the eyes of the loved ones who gazed at the pale form, a life of religious piety had prepared the gentle sufferer for this last scene, and her spirit was filled with rejoicing as she passed out from the frail tabernacle of flesh, and knew that her sufferings would forever end as soon as she partook of that tree whose fruit is for the healing of all nations. Mrs. Lane, with her husband, the late Sanders Lane, moved to Georgia from North Carolina in 1830, and settled on Big Indian creek ten miles north west of Perry, where they resided for many years. It was during her life in that section of the county that it became necessary for Mr. Lane to visit Savannah, which was then the seat of government, to have his land title made secure; and being in humble circumstances, Mr. Lane made the entire trip on foot, while the good wife cared for the home and conducted the farm. A few years later they were prosperous and bought and built the beautiful home near Hickory Grove, where both husband and wife died. She was the mother of eleven children. Of these only two were boys, both of whom entered the Confederate service, and died in defense of their homes. Mrs. Lane was among the founders of the Hickory Grove church, and was one of its first members. Her pure and beautiful life speaks for itself, and so well was her sweet influence felt, and so well were her religious warnings, that her children are all members of the church she loved so devotedly, and are highly respected christians. It was her fixed rule all through life to humbly offer prayer each day at sundown to the Heavenly Father for the many blessings sent her. She talked interestingly of her religious experience and the many direct answers to her prayers. On my last visit to her home, just a few days before the sad end, she assured me that all was well with her, and that she was only awaiting the summons to her eternal home. The remains were laid to rest by loving hands, who had known loved and respected her so well during life. The deceased was in the 87th year of her age. She leaves five daughters, many grand and great-grandchildren, and a host of loving and affectionate friends to mourn her loss. -A FRIEND.
