Smoak, widow of the late A. Perry Smoak, died of typhoid fever at her home at Crest, Upson county, Ga., on October the 10th and was buried in Evergreen cemetery Oct. 11th at Perry, Ga. She was the daughter of an old citizen of this county, Dr. M. H. Means, who died in 1889. She graduated at Wesleyan Female College in 1875; married A. P. Smoak in 1876. In 1889 her husband was accidentally killed on his farm home near Perry, leaving her with five small children, the youngest of whom soon followed her father to the grave. Mrs. Smoak, being a devoted wife, preceded to fight the battle of life bravely with the full and unstinted cooperation of her children who honored their mother in every way. She worked faithfully for humanity, having founded a school in a neighborhood where the children had had practically no educational advantages. She raised money, built a two story building, opened her school, and taught without pay till she induced the board of education to put the school on the county. With her farm and her school she led and active life, which she could never been induced to abandom [sic]. The community prospered, children grew up to honor her efforts, and none feel her loss more than the community for which she gave her best efforts for the last fourteen years. "Well done, good and faithful servant, can truthfully be said of her, for she was faithful to the end. She is survived by four children: Charles M. Smoak and Perry M. Smoak of Atlanta, Mrs. James L. Mallory of Avaton, Ga., and Mrs. Jno. B. Mallory of Omega, Ga. Three sisters, Mrs. A. A. Smoak of Perry, Mrs. Rosalie Bennett and Mrs. Ben Bryan of Vienna; four brothers, T. A. E. Means of Atlanta, Z. B. Means of Eagle Lake, Fla, R. L. Means of Chattanooga, Tenn, and James L. Means of Elko, Ga. The family and relatives of Mrs. Smoak have the tenderest sympathy of their many friends, she and her relatives being especially well known and highly esteemed in Perry, and throughout Houston county. Additional Comments: Sarah Virginia Means was born on 25 August 1857 in Houston Co., GA, the daughter of Dr. Matthew Harvey Means and Martha Virginia (Lester) Means. Sallie married Abraham Perry Smoak in Houston Co., GA on 7 December 1876.
