Smoak Passes At Home Here January 19 Mrs. Andrew A. Smoak, age 73, passed away at her home here Wednesday night after a long illness. She was before her marriage 54 years ago, Miss Susan Alice Means, of Elko. Mrs. Smoak was a member of the Perry Methodist church, of the Sgt. Clinton D. Duncan chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and of the Gen. Daniel C. Stewart chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a Sunday school teacher for several years. She is survived by her husband who is a prominent farmer and financier of this community. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. J. L. Long, Fort Valley; Mrs. C. P. Marshall, Lakeland, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. C. I. Bennett, Macon; three brothers, R. J. Means, Winston-Salem, N. C.; J. D. Means, Elko; Z. B. Means, Portsmouth, Va. Seven grandchildren survive: Mrs. Geo. Davis and Mrs. Chas. Culpepper, Jacksonville, Fla.; Legare Day, Macon; C. P. Marshall, Jr., Andrew Smoak Marshall, and Jack Marshall, Lakeland, Fla.; and Walter Murray, Jr., Bronwood, Ga. Five great-grandchildren also survive: Dorothy, Jimmie, and Beverly Culpepper; Geo. Davis, Jr., and Charles P. Marshall, III. Funeral services were held at the residence at 2 p. m. Friday with the Rev. L. C. Gray, Methodist pastor, officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen cemetry [sic]. Pallbearers were E. F. Barfield, S. A. Nunn, J. W. Bloodworth, C. E. Andrew, S. L. Norwood, W. K. Whipple, C. E. McLendon, Q. J. Mathews. A number of family friends acted as honorary pallbearers. Among the out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Long and Mrs. A. J. Houser, Jr., Fort Valley; Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Marshall and sons, Lakeland, Fla.; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Culpepper and daughter, Dorothy and Mrs. Chas. Davis, Jacksonville, Fla.; Mr. and Mrs. Legare Day, Macon; Mr. Perry Smoak, Jr., and daughter, Mrs. Barnes, Atlanta; Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Smoak and daughter, Mary Griffin; Mrs. C. I. Bennett and Miss Louise Bryan, Macon; Mr. J. D. Means, Elko; Mr. Walter Murray and son, Walter, Jr., Bronwood, Ga. Additional Comments: Susan Alice Means was born 3 July 1864 in Houston Co., the son of Dr. Matthew Harvey Means and Martha Virginia (Lester) Means. Alice married Andrew Asbury Smoak on 25 October 1882 in Houston Co., GA.
