A. Thurmond Dies at Age 94 Funeral services for Charles Archibald Thurmond, 94, prominent retired farmer and merchant and developer of the Thurmond Grey watermelon, were held last Thursday at Gardner Watson Funeral Home. The Rev. J. B. Smith, pastor of the Perry Methodist Church, conducted the services and burial was in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Thurmond died Wednesday, February 16, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. B. Andrew, Sr. He had been ill for several years. Mr. Thurmond was a resident of the county for 75 years. He was a Master Farmer of Georgia several years ago. He was a graduate of the Hilliard Institute and was a member of the Methodist Church. He was born in Forsyth, Ga. He is survived by three daughters Mrs. Andrew; Miss Olga Thurmond son [sic] of Columbus; a brother, George of Perry and Mrs. Foy D. Thomas-F. Thurmond [sic; should be Thomason] of Griffin; a sister, Mrs. Ed Bryan of Tampa, Fla.; a half-brother, Dr. Thomas Thurmond of Griffin and a half-sister, Mrs. Maude Hill [sic; should be Hall] of Barnesville; two nephews and one niece, three grandchildren, Charles Andrew of Perry; C. B. Andrew, Jr., of Norfolk, Va.; and Mrs. Travis Phillips of DeRidder, La. Pallbearers were C. E. McLendon, C. E. Andrew, B. H. Andrew, Lewis Harper, S. L. Norwood and E. W. Traylor. Honorary pallbearers were M. G. Edwards, J. W. Bloodworth, F. M. Greene, Sr., S. W. Hickson, T. C. Rogers, P. M. Beckham, T. S. Chapman, C. P. Gray and Cecil Moody. Mr. Thurmond was widely known in this section for his ability as a farmer. His loss will be keenly felt in the community.
