He has probably as many descendants, or more, from his daughters. If it were possible to enumerate them, there would probably be a list of 5,000 or more. The one mentioned in this book is incomplete, but is the best the writer has been able to do. They are scattered over some dozen states, and there may be more, if all could be located. Daniel Henderson was of Scotch-Irish descent, probably being of the contingent of immigrants coming into the colonies during the eighteenth century, and settling in the mountains of Virginia. From that place they gradually trickled down through the mountains of North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. It is not known whether he came from Scotland or whether his family came to America and he was born in this country. However, it is known that he came from the State of North Carolina, sometime early in the nineteenth century, probably before the year 1810, and settled in Irwin County, on what is now known as the "Wyatt Tucker Place" about nine miles southeast of Ocilla. He was at the time married to Sallie McBride Henderson, whom he had previously married in North Carolina. They were among the early settlers of this section. The Indians had not yet been removed from Georgia; the wolves howled about the cabin doors at night; and deer and other game were to be had almost for the taking. Most certainly Irwin County was a goodly land to look upon when this sturdy old pioneer first laid his eyes upon it. He was the father of nine children, six girls, to-wit: Sarah Henderson, who married Benjamin Griffin; Catharine Henderson, who married Jacob Paulk; Mary Henderson, who married John McInnis; Nancy Henderson, who married 'Thomas Paulk; Margaret Henderson, who married James Nobles; and Elizabeth Henderson, who married Micajah Tucker. The three sons were John Henderson, who married Mary Whitley; Manasseh Henderson, who married Mary Whiddon; and Daniel Henderson, who married Fereby A. Whiddon. In that day and time living was easy in a way, but crude. The necessaries of life were few, and of luxuries, there were none. The loom and the spinning wheel constituted the dry-goods store; the hunting ground was the smoke house; and a small clearing sufficed to provide bread for the family, and cotton for the loom. These early settlers were indeed made of stern stuff. Of such was the subject of this article. Not much is definitely known of his personal life. He no doubt busied himself about many things. Those were stirring days, but scribes were few, and those old men of action had no time to write of their exploits. In fact, they never dreamed that the life they were then living would ever be of the slightest interest to their children's children a hundred years, from thence. As near as the writer is able to learn, he died about 1825, and was buried on the place first settled by him, the "Wyatt Tucker Place," above referred to. His grave was never marked, and its exact location is not now known. Diligent effort has been made during the last two years, without results, to locate this grave, to the end that a suit-able monument might be erected thereon. It is yet hoped that it may be located, and if success may crown our efforts, there are many hundreds living who will be pleased to contribute to a fund with which to place a monument upon the site. DANIEL HENDERSON Daniel Henderson, the subject of this article, was the youngest child of Daniel Henderson and Sallie McBride Henderson. He was born June 17, 1818, and it is supposed that he was born after his parents came to Georgia, from North Carolina, but of this the writer is not certain, and has been unable to secure more definite information. He was married to Fereby A. Whiddon, November 18, 1841, and there was born to them eleven children, eight boys and three girls, whose names may be found further on in this book. He first settled on the hill just across the first branch south from Gladys, on the road leading from Ocilla to Alapaha, and here he lived until Manasseh Henderson, his eldest child, was born. He then sold this home and bought two lots of land four miles west from the present site of the city of Sycamore, the latter named place not then being in existence. This place was then a part of Irwin County, later a part of Worth County, but now a part of Turner County. The greater part of his busy life was spent at this place, but later alternating between this place and a home he owned in Isabella, the county seat of Worth County at that time. He, late in life, sold his home near where Sycamore now stands, and had a new home built near Ocilla, but it seems he never lived to occupy this home himself. He had been in poor health for some-time, and came to the home of his son-in-law, Wiley Whitley, who then lived where Bob Berry now lives just west of the road leading from Ocilla to Fitzgerald, and while there was taken violently ill, and died February 8, 1879. He had been a Mason for long years, and was buried by them or under their directions at Brushy Creek cemetery, where he now rests. He was in every respect a public spirited man. He was a man of broad vision. He evidently saw a great future for this good land. He was as well educated as the ad-vantages of that day and time would admit. He could read and write, which was saying much for a person of his generation. He did all he could to educate his children; but at the time he should have been at this important task, the Civil War came on, taking him from his home and loved ones and family duties, and into the service of the Southern Armies. The women and children could barely secure the scant necessities of life, and had no time for school. He owned a home in Isabella, where he kept his family part of the time, alternating between it and his home near Sycamore, in order that he might be able to send his children to school. After school months were over, he usually moved back to his farm in order that the boys might engage in the work of farming. It might be of interest to say that Isabella was a small country village, located eighteen miles east from Albany, and about four miles slightly northwest from Sylvester. Worth County was created about 1854, and he was one of the moving spirits in creating this new county. He was a useful man. He represented Worth County in the Georgia Legislature during and for the following years: 1859-60, 1861-62, 1863-64, and 1875-76. The first office he ever held was that of judge of the Inferior Court of Worth County, a court of importance in that day, but which has been long since supplanted by other courts. In March 1862 he joined Company B of the 10th Georgia Battalion, which company he served as captain. His first service was at Macon, Georgia, guarding prisoners. He was later ordered to Virginia, and arrived there just at the close of the second battle of Fredericksburg. He served in the army of Virginia from that time until some time in 1863, when he resigned, having been elected to represent Worth County in the Georgia Legislature for the years 1863-64. He was a great hunter. The writer remembers as a small boy, that his father went out one Saturday and killed five large deer, being all large bucks, it being a violation of good hunting ethics to kill a doe at all. The following Monday he went out again and killed seven large bucks. Of course, it will be understood that there were no hunting laws then. A person could kill as many deer during any season, or out of season, as he cared to. They were plentiful. But the average hunter never killed one only. He depended on the hunt for his meat, and this accounts for his killing many deer on the same day. He was also the owner of a large herd of cattle, and of a considerable flock of sheep; however, the sheep were not very profitable on account of dogs and an occasional wolf making serious inroads upon them. He also engaged in a small way in the mercantile business while living at Isabella. The mercantile business in that day was not very profitable on account of the country being sparsely settled. In fact it was more of a favor to the community and country round about, than a business carried on for profit, because when a member of the community needed some small article, it was impossible for him to set out to some store, ten, twenty or maybe fifty miles away; he must wait until the quantity of goods needed warranted such a trip. We can well imagine that the good wife and family stinted themselves and did with-out many of the things we now call the absolute necessities of life just because they were not to be had, except by taking a long journey, for which they were poorly equipped. In personal appearance he was of medium height, probably six feet tall, and much of a man physically, weighing about 200 pounds, which he carried without effort. The strength of men was in that day tested at the "Log rollings," which institution is now long forgotten, and unknown to many who will read this article. The writer remembers it as notoriously known that his father could lift more at the end of a hand-spike, than any man in the country, and he was the master of all the negro slaves of the country in this feat. It is also related of him that he found no trouble in walking along and turning summersaults, catching on his feet and continuing as if nothing had happened. We can well believe it would do the souls of the college lads good to see such a man as this old pioneer was related to have been, plowing through the ranks of his enemy on the football field. He was admired by all who knew him on account of his physical perfection, and he was both admired and loved by all who knew him on account of his willingly helping all who called on him. He was also universally respected in the realm of his acquaintance on account of his mental acquirements under the handicaps that hindered him. Elisha Tucker served in 50th Georgia Regiment. It is a source of regret that I am unable to give rather an extended account of the family of Daniel Henderson and Sallie McBride Henderson. It has already been explained that this cannot be done with no more space than can be devoted to the work. All that it seems possible to do is to give a very general account of these families and, which directly follows. Christian Henderson married Godfrey Purvis. They settled in Irwin County near where Gladys now stands. They were hard working people; devoting all their time to farming and stock raising. They raised a large family, who were respected in the community. John Henderson married Rhoda Whitley. They settled just beyond where W. F. Paulk now lives, about eight miles southeast of Ocilla. John was a Methodist preacher, something rather unusual in the Henderson family. He was one of the colony members coming to Irwin County from North Carolina. He was born in 1787. They also raised a large family. Catharine Henderson married Jacob Paulk. They settled about six miles due east from Ocilla. He was a man of prominence, owning many slaves. He was a most kindly man. A hungry man never came to his house and went away such. He always took great interest in charitable work. Wherever there was want, there he delighted to go. He was a leading member in the Brushy Creek church. He was also the father of a large family of children. Nancy Henderson married Thomas Paulk. They settled about five miles northwest of Willacoochee, Georgia. They engaged in farming, and raising stock. He too was the father of a considerable family. Sarah Henderson married Benjamin Griffin. They settled and built up a place just beyond Reedy Creek on the road leading from Ocilla to Lax. Griffin was a Primitive Baptist preacher of the old school, what are now termed Hard Shells. They had some family, and engaged in farming as did most of the other members of this family. Mary Henderson married John McInnis. They settled in Berrien County, where they engaged in farming and stock raising. They raised rather a small family, and their descendants are not now very numerous. Margaret Henderson married James Nobles. They settled in Berrien County. He was a prominent man in his county; well thought of; engaged in farming and stock raising, as that was about all there was to be done in those days. He, too, was the father of a large family. His family now seem to be scattered in several counties, and in other states, especially the State of Florida. Elizabeth Henderson married Micajah Tucker. They settled on a place about nine miles south of Ocilla on the road leading from Ocilla to Alapaha. He was a successful farmer and stock raiser. His wife gave birth to quite a number of children and died. Tucker married a second time, his second wife giving birth also to quite a number of children. He was in all the father of an unusually large family of children. Manasseh Henderson married Mary Whiddon. They settled within one and a half miles of where the city of Ashburn is now located in Turner County. They had no children. They were both hard workers and great savers. They accumulated quite a fortune during their lives. They were well thought of in the community. They had a very large number of slaves. Elias Whiddon married Nancy Fletcher, daughter of Joe Fletcher, one of the old Colony Members coming from North Carolina to Irwin County early in the Nineteenth Century. He settled one and a half miles above where Ashburn now stands on the road leading north from Ash-burn. He engaged rather extensively in raising of live-stock and especially cattle. His family was rather a large one. He went to the war along with many others of the family; he contracted measles while in the service, came home and died. His wife contracted measles also and died not long afterwards. Rachel Whiddon married George Paulk; son of Jacob and Catharine Paulk. They lived one and a half miles east of Ocilla on the place where Bob Henderson lived at the time of his death. He was very active in politics. He represented Irwin County in Georgia Senate two terms. He was the father of a considerable family. He died rather early in life. Martha Van Whiddon married Micajah Paulk, brother to George Paulk above mentioned. He lived on the place where Manasseh Paulk now lives six miles east of Ocilla. He had a family of some seven or eight children. Unie Whiddon married W. R. Clements. His work and life record will be found on another page. Jane Whiddon married Wm. Branch. She is the only one of the old Whiddon family now living, and she is 84 years old. They settled near the present site of Chula, Georgia, and lived there from time they were married until a few years ago. They raised a family of good men and women, most of them settling round about Chula. Wm. Whiddon, son of Lott Whiddon and Judy Whiddon, married Elizabeth Ford, who was the daughter of G. G. Ford, of Worth County. They settled eight miles north of old Isabella on the public road leading from Isabella to Warwick, Worth County. They lived there all their lives, except two years spent in Texas. They had the traditionally large family. James W. Whiddon, son of Lott and Judy Whiddon, married Lucy Branch, daughter of Dave and Millie Branch. They settled some 9 miles south from present site of Sycamore, where they raised a large family in peace and quietness. All the people above enumerated were of the substantial common people, the backbone of the country. It would be hard to estimate the influence of this family up-on the country. The Whiddons above are brothers and sisters of Fereby A. Whiddon Henderson. A full list of the families of the people above mentioned will be found further on in this book. This large family is and has been represented in many different walks of life. The Records of the Georgia Senate contain the names of quite a number of the members of the family. They have invariably been a people simple in their life and tastes, but useful in the community. We may justly be pardoned if we express some degree of pride in the fact that so many of the family have been honored by the people in a political way, and some of them a number of times. A larger number have also rep-resented Irwin County in the Georgia House of Representatives. A list of every Representative from Irwin County from 1818 to the present time will be found following this article, with the dates of the sessions in which they served following their names. In that list will be found members of this family whose names are as follows: John B. Dorminey, Jacob Dorminey, J. B. Fletcher, Wm. Branch, Willis Dorminey, J. A. J. Henderson, D. A. McInnis, T. B. Clements, 1925-26. It will be seen from inspection of the record that this family has largely peopled Irwin County, but many have lived in other counties. Other counties have been created from Irwin, once a very large scope of territory, so they are to be found in large numbers in Berrien, Worth and Turner counties, and especially the last named, which a few years ago was created largely from Worth County. J. B. Pate represented Dooly County two terms in the Legislature. J. W. Henderson represented Turner County in the Georgia House of Representatives in 1909, 10, 11 and 12. James Nobles represented Berrien County in the Georgia House of Representatives in 1859 and 60. Thomas Paulk represented Berrien County in the Georgia House of Representatives in 1868-69-70, and 1882-83. It is a matter of special interest that he introduced and had passed a bill placing the license for the privilege of selling liquor in Berrien County at $10,000.00, which was and in fact intended to be prohibitive. The result was that liquor was thus driven out of Berrien County. It was the first dry county in the State of Georgia. J. H. Young represented Tift County in the Georgia House of Representatives for the years 1915-16. Daniel Henderson represented Worth County in the Georgia House of Representatives during the sessions of 1859-60, 1861-62, 1863-64, and 1875-76. T. L. Paulk represented Coffee County in the House of Representatives of Georgia during the years of 1896-97. T. J. Luke was elected Representative from Ben Hill County and served in the House of Representatives of Georgia during the years 1921-22. D. J. Branch served as Representative from Turner County during the years 1919-20-21 and 22. Wright Paulk was elected to serve as Representative for Ben Hill County and served in the House of Representatives for the years, 1911-12 and 1913-14. Dr. George A. Paulk was elected to represent Berrien County in the House of Representatives of Georgia for the years 1909 and 10, and again for the years 1913-14. He was elected as State Senator from the 6th Senatorial District and. served during the years 1915-16. He was appointed by the Governor as a member of the Industrial Commission of Georgia February 1, 1924, and served until May 1, 1925, when he resigned. He was also one time a member of the Georgia State Board of Medical Examiners. He was also a Delegate to the Famous Democratic National Convention held in New York in 1924. The record of the family would not be at all complete without some record of those who served in the Civil War. Quite a number of them gave their lives to the cause of the Confederacy in this titanic struggle. Of the large company who went away there are now, September 28, 1925, only three living. It was indeed a sad day for those they left behind them, but the consciousness of having served their country well in its time of peril was more than sufficient to repay them for all the suffering they underwent. So far as can now be ascertained those who served in the war are as follows: Berrien Hobby, Company B, 10th Georgia Battalion. Capt. Daniel Henderson, Company B, 10th Georgia Battalion. Capt. M. Henderson, Company B, 10th Georgia Battalion. James N. Hobby, Company B, 10th Georgia Battalion. John Wommack, Company B, 10th Georgia Battalion. He was killed at Deep Bottom on August 16, 1863. Lott Ross, Company B, 10th Georgia Battalion. He was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness in 1863. Wm. Henderson, Company F, State Reserves, later Company F, 10th Georgia State Troops. Wounded Griswouldsville, Nov. 22, 1864. John Henderson, Company F, 10th Georgia State Troops. Jacob Purvis, Company F, 49th Georgia Regiment. Died in the service. John Purvis, Company F, 49th Georgia Regiment. Died in the service. Daniel Purvis, Company F, 49th Georgia Regiment. He was wounded in the service in Virginia. Survived and lived until few years ago. Died in Irwin County, Georgia. John Grantham, Company F, 49th Georgia Regiment. Had one arm shot off while serving in Virginia. Alonzo Paulk, Company F, 49th Georgia Regiment, died of pneumonia at Guinea Station, Virginia, June 1, 1863. Jacob H. Paulk, Company F, 49th Georgia Regiment. Wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 31, 1863. Wounded in face, thigh and abdomen at Battle of Wilderness. Captured at Battle of Wilderness, May 6, 1864, sent to 1st Division, 2nd A. C. Hospital, died in prison in 1865. ------------------- Daniel Henderson, married in North Carolina to Sallie McBride. Their children are: John Henderson, born October 15, 1798, married Rhoda Whitley.
