   At the beginning of the Civil War the whole South was one vast military camp
and her gallant sons were gathering to rush to the scene of war ready to lay
down their lives in a cause they felt to be just and sacred. Irwin County was no
exception to the rule, as no community could boast of more loyalty to the
Southern cause. While other sections might have been more densely populated,
none were braver and more loyal than the sons of old Irwin. The following is a
list of the soldiers who went from this county. The first company was Company A,
known as the Irwin County Cowboys.
