Cherry St., who died Saturday, Oct. 26, 1991 at Palemon Gaskins Nursing Home, were held Monday at Holt Baptist Church. The Rev. L. A. (Sonny) Pate was the officiating minister at the 3:30 pm memorial service in the church sanctuary and at graveside in the church cemetery. Music was provided by Angie Harper, organist. Pallbearers were Billy Bates, Ricky Bates, Johnny Bates, Tommy Pettis, Michael Day, and Larry Day. Born Sept. 12, 1894 in Laurens County, Mrs. Bates was the daughter of the late Thomas Albert and Eunity Darsey Phillips. A homemaker and retired waitress, she had lived in Ocilla since 1929. moving from Thomaston, Ga. where she was employed in a cotton mill. The widow of William Joshua Bates, she was a member of Buckhorn Methodist Church near Dexter, Ga. Survivors include two daughters, Eva B. Pettis and Reba B. Roberts, both of Ocilla; two sisters, Essie Maddox and Flora Bartlett, both of Sand Springs, OK.; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
