A native of Irwin County, Mr. Worthy was a son of the late G. Frank and Elizabeth Hogan Worthy. He was preceded in death by a son, Van K. Worthy Jr. He was one of the original state troopers in 1937 and was retired from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as a special investigator. He was a deputy with Clarke County Sheriff's Department and worked for Settles Bonding Co. He was a member of the Peace Officers Association, Tri-State Law Enforcement Association, Mason Lodge 22 F&AM and Prince Avenue Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Lord & Stephens Chapel, West, with the Rev. Bill Ricketts and John Gore officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Mattie W. Worthy; a daughter, Monisa Smith, Athens; a brother, C.R. Worthy, Hiawassee; three sisters, Mae Avery, Quitman, Vera Williams, Branford, Fla., and Merle Smith, Thomasville; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Additional Comments: This item was in my Mother's Trunk.
