He entered the service in North Carolina in 1778 and participated in General John Ashe's Defeat at Briar Greek, Georgia. He served with General Thomas Sumter's forces in engagements at Ramsour's Mill, King's Mountain, Fishing Creek and Musgrove's Mill. Captain Wade Hampton, General Andrew Pickins, Colonel John Purvis and Captain Williams are mentioned in the application papers.
