Additional Comments: John Williamson died October 25, 1849. A will was submitted which was immediately contested by older sons & sons-in-law, as it favored the widow Winney and the younger children. A Jackson Co. jury found the will invalid, and that decision was upheld by the Georgia Supreme Court in its October Term 1853. The administrators above were named, and the ‘intestate’ estate proceedings began. Appeals continued locally and the case was finally given to a Court of Equity in Jackson Co. Superior Court. Ultimate resolution was decided by three arbiters, and distributions were made in late 1857 and early 1858. See additional related information on this site. Many of the “loose papers” regarding the estate are found in the Hargrett Library, UGA Main Library-Athens GA. Legal notices can be found online in the ‘historic newspapers’ collection of The Digital Library of Georgia.
