Only a few months ago his wife, Mrs. Eva McNeil Ayers, preceded him to the grave, and her body was buried in her native home, McKenenie, Tenn., by the side of whom the body of Judge Ayers was interred. They leave four sons, Sanford, of Atlanta; Nathan, of High Point, N.C.; Richard, of Baltimore; and Addison, a student at Harvard University. No young men who were ever reared in this county are held in higher esteem than these sons of Judge and Mrs. Ayers. Judge Ayers was sixty-eight years old, and a native of Habersham county. After graduating at the University of Georgia in 1896, he came to Jefferson to practice his chosen profession, the law. He manifested marked ability, and was soon recognized as a careful, courageous and an able Lawyer, and his practice became extensive. On him was bestowed political honors by the people. Chosen to be mayor of Jefferson, he left a record of progress and betterment for the city. He represented Jackson county in the House and the Thirty-Third Senatorial district in the Senate, where he made a record for statesmanship and patriotism. For fourteen years he had served as Judge of the City Court of Jefferson, which office he held at the time of his death. For several years he served as a trustee of Martin Institute. He was a Mason, and a leading member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson. Funeral services were held in this church Saturday morning, where tributes were paid him by Rev. A. J. Johnson, former pastor of the church, Rev. A. B. Eliser, pastor of Jefferson Methodist church, and John N. Holder, Miss Mabeth Storey rendered sweet music on the piano for this sad occasion.
