Born on February 6, 1937, in Loris, S.C., he was the son of the late Gerald R. Brooks, a Jackson County native, and Mary Belle Bellamy Brooks. Mr. Brooks was preceded in death by a son, Mark. He grew up on his parent’s tobacco farm out from Loris, S.C., and credited the long hot summer days of work on the farm with forming his work ethics, which allowed him to become a successful business man. He received a degree in dairy science from Clemson University in 1960, and founded Naturally Fresh Foods in Atlanta. Naturally fresh preservative free, refrigerated salad dressings and sauces are found in the produce sections of grocery stores in all 50 states. In 1986 he acquired a small Tampa Bay, Fla., area restaurant called Hooters. Since that time the chain has grown to over 430 locations in 46 states and 20 different countries. He is also owner of the Hooters Pro Cup Series, a stock car racing series that has grown to include races along the eastern seaboard. Each race season two Hooters Pro Cup series races are held at Peach State Race Track in Jefferson. As he believed in sharing his good fortune, his college alma mater, Clemson University, campus is home to the state-of-the-art Brooks Center for Performing Arts, the Brooks Institute for Sports Science and the Brooks Motor Sports Institute. He also did much to support his home town of Myrtle Beach, S.C. In 2003 Coastal Carolina University honored one of their biggest supporters by naming their new football facility, Brooks stadium, in honor of him, as he gave the school two million dollars to help with the construction of the football facility. Since 1992 the Hooter Endowment Fund has donated over eight million dollars to local and national charities. Some recipients were the Juvenile Diabetes Association, cancer research, the Special Olympics, and his childhood church, Camp Swamp Methodist. Survivors include his wife, Tammy; daughter, Bonnie Belle; son, Coby; three grandchildren; two brothers, Gerald and Glenn; three sisters, Olis, Donna and Melinda; 8 first cousins in Jackson County, Jackie, Larry and James Brooks, Sue Brooks Holliman, Ruth White, Carolyn and Hazel Martin and Gaynelle Wheeler.
