Barnett Passes Last Week Mr. John W. Barnett, the son of Joseph and Virginia Glenn Barnett, was born Nov. 22, 1860 and died Feb. 18, 1934. For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were demolished we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens" In the going of Mr. Barnett to his heavenly home, Commerce and the surrounding community has lost a splendid, upright, honest, law-abiding citizen and a faithful Christian. Such characteristics depict a truly great life, no matter how quietly and unassumingly it may have been spent. As a child he was never robust and strong, and he had to pass through the trying days of the war without a father’s care and counsel, yet in spite of these handicaps he developed into a man of high ideals and noble character. His father, having died during the war, the responsibility of rearing a daughter and son fell to the lot of his godly mother, who imbedded into his growing life such qualities as honesty, sobriety and a reverence for God and His church. In about 1879 he united with the Blacks Creek Baptist church. Lately he transferred his membership to the First Baptist church, at Commerce, where he remained a faithful member until his death, though feeble health had prevented his regular attendance upon the services for several years. An outstanding blessing that came into his life was his marriage, on August 25, 1887, to Bunie B. Minish, by the sainted Rev. J. F. Goode. This union was blessed with six children, all of whom are worthy Christian citizens, all of the sons have been very active in their respective churches, serving as Sunday school superintendents. Thus the principles of his life are being carried on and he still lives in the lives of his children. Besides his wife, he is survived by six children, E. J. and F. L. Barnett of Sycamore, Ga.; Mrs. Jesse Eubanks, Mrs. R. H. Jones, W. Y. Barnett and Mrs. A. B. Brown, all of Commerce; also 21 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Many friends and relatives met as a last tribute to this good man at the funeral services conducted by Rev. C.C. Tooke, assisted by Rev. T. C. Hardman. Interment was at the Apple Valley cemetery. Little-Ward in chare of funeral.
