Born in Rabun County, he was the son of the late Virgil Austin and Bertha May Dickerson Carnes. He was the owner of Carnes Construction, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Commerce, the Hudson Lodge #294F&AM, board of directors of the Georgia Highway Contractors Association in 1974,1975 and 1979. Mr. Carnes was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Russell Carnes. Survivors include a daughter, Pamela C. Barnett, Commerce; two sons, Max W. Carnes Jr., Baldwin, and William C. Carnes, Villa Rica; four sisters, Floy M. Underwood, Lilburn, Sue Smith, Athens, Kitty Vinson, Dillard, and Carolyn Brewer, Clayton; a special friend, Betty Westbrooks, Danielsville; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 29, at the First United Methodist Church of Commerce with the Dr. David Bowen officiating. Burial was in the Jackson Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the First Methodist Church of Commerce. Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.
