Like as a shock of corn cometh in its season, so did Bro. Samuel Smith House come to his grave in a full age, at his home In Jackson Co., Ga., Aug. 19, 1896. He was born June 21, 1819, and was married to Margaret L. England in White Co., Ga., Aug. 22, 1841. For fifty-five years these two traveled life's pilgrimage together. To them were born 12 children. The mother and six children yet live to mourn his death. Bro. House was a man of convictions and determination; he had great powers of endurance, physically, mentally and spirtually. He provided well for his household, often at the cost of much labor and exposure. He was taken prisoner by Sherman's army units march through Georgia. In his spiritual life he fought many fierce battles, maintaining his integrity unto the end. Verily "he endured hardness as a good soldier." After his marriage he joined the M.E. church, but was immersed, because he believed the scriptures taught it. As the end of life approached, he thought and spoke much about death. He ernestly endeavored to "set his house in order," looking to the temporal welfare of his household, but especially to the eternal welfare of his soul. He looked forward to death as the end of all sorrow and the entrance upon eternal rest. He arranged for his funeral months before his death, choosing the 21st chapter of Revelation to the read at his burial, and the 4th verse for the text. His last sickness was long and severe. He died as the Christian dieth, with a firm trust in the blood of Jesus, and a bright hope of immortality. Many dear friends and loved ones gathered, and lovingly laid him to rest in the little cemetery at Bethany church, where he will sweetly sleep until the resurrection morn. R.D. Hawkins.
