L G Hardman, Jr. Died Wednesday in Copenhagen

Lamartine Griffin Hardman, Jr. , 70, of Commerce, one of Jackson County and 
Georgia's most prominent citizens, died Wednesday morning of an apparent heart 
attack in Copenhagen, Denmark. 

Mr. Hardman was a life-long resident of Commerce.  He was chairman of the 
board of Harmony Grove Mills, Inc. and president of the First National Bank in 
Commerce.  Long a director and past president of the American Testile 
Manufacturers Institute and past president of the Georgia Textile 
Manufacturers Association.

He served for many years as a director of the Citizens and Southern National 
Bank and the Georgia Power Company, and at the time of his death was serving 
as a director of Bibb Manufacturing Company, Macon. 

He was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce where he 
served as a deacon for many years.   He also served for several years as 
president of the Georgia Baptist Foundation.

At the time of his death, Mr. Hardman was leading a tour by American business 
and professional people of NATO defense installations in his capacity as 
president of the Defense Orientation Conference Association.

Immediately prior to his death, Mr. Hardman was recognized by the citizens of 
his community for his leadership in establishing the Hurricane Shoals 
Recreational Park in Jackson County. 

Mr. Hardman was a member of Phi Delta Theta social fraternity, The Commerce 
Kiwanis Club, of which he was past Lt. Governor, Capital City Club, The 
Commerce Club, and Piedmont Driving Club of Atlanta. 

He was the son of the late governor of Georgia, Dr. Lamartine Griffin Hardman 
and Mrs. Hardman, the former Emma Griffin. 

He leaves surviving his widow, the former Dorothy Shell of Bainbridge; two 
sons, Lamartine Griffin Hardman, III, of Commerce; Dr. John Barnett Hardman, 
II, of Atlanta; one daughter, Mrs. Wyckliffe A. Knox, Jr. (Shell), of Augusta; 
three sisters, Mrs. Linton M. Collins of Sautee-Nacoochee; Mrs. Joseph M. Ivie 
of Nashville, Tennessee; and Emma H. Thomson of Atlanta and eight 
grandchildren. 

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.  Contributions may be made to the First 
Baptist Church Building Fund, Commerce, Georgia.
