She was born in Banks County and was the daughter of the late Charles Hampton and Nelia B. Segars McWhorter. She was a member of the Antioch United Methodist Church, was retired from Blue Bell, and later helped her husband raise cattle and chickens. She was educated at Young Harris College and taught school. Known to most who came to know her as “Nan”, she was well known for her love of gardening, cats and cooking. As long as she was able, she spent time in her flower garden, and had a wide variety of flowers and bushes. She enjoyed working in her flower garden and spending time outside, according to loved ones. Her love for cats produced many cat themed presents on birthdays and Christmas. She was proud of her cat figurines and was quick to show off her collection. Her son built her a cabinet to showcase them, and every visitor got a tour of her immense collection. Mrs. Howington loved to cook and her love for hosting produced many visitors. Throughout her long life, she hosted many co-workers, college roommates, and friends of her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She always made sure there was plenty of good food and dessert for her guests. Her specialty was fried chicken and chocolate pies, and every first-time visitor left commenting on the great meal and wonderful dessert. Mrs. Howington was preceded in death by her husband, Otha Howington. Survivors include two daughters, Pat Ayers and Onelia Wallace, Nicholson; two sons, Kenneth Howington, Nicholson, and Pete Howington, Monroe; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 12, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Revs. Richard Cathy and Terry Smith officiating. Burial was in the Nicholson Cemetery. Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.
