He was born on July 16, 1926, and was the son of the late William Grady and Mary McElroy Tolbert. He lived most of his life in Jackson County and surrounding areas of Madison County and Winterville. He graduated from Winterville High School and immediately enlisted in the United States Navy, serving in Saipan during World War II. After the war he came back to Madison County only leaving after getting a job with Plantation Pipeline Company and moving to North Carolina. He worked for that company through several transfers until 1962 when he left PPL and went to Nevada and California on construction with Southern Pacific Pipeline for six months. He came back east and went to work with Colonial Pipeline and worked with them until his retirement in 1986. His passions were working on cars, reading and homemade ice cream. There was never a person requesting his help that he turned down. His loss will be felt by all who knew him, according to loved ones. Mr. Tolbert was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Tolbert Edwards. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Helan Bowden Tolbert; daughters and son-in-law, Sharon Tolbert O’Brien, Campobello, S.C. and Stephanie Tolbert and Robert Bradley, Molena; son, Thomas Geoffrey Tolbert, Fountain Inn, S.C.; grandson, Charles A. Biershenk; daughter-in-law, Dawn Pearson Tolbert with sons Seth and Joshua; son-in-law, Patrick O’Brien and daughters Taylor and Lauren; granddaughters, Shannon Bradley Byers and Branwyn Bradley Reeves; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Theron Grady and Betty Tolbert, Shelby, N.C. and Daniel Joseph and Nell Tolbert, Madison County; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The going home celebration was held Sunday, August 13 with the Rev. Larry Hyder of Ben Avon Methodist Church officiating. Burial was at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, S.C. Pallbearers were Thomas Tolbert, Robert Bradley, Patrick O’Brien, David Byers, and Ruel Parker. Honorary pallbearers were Colonial Pipeline employees, Bob Hoover, Bob Shoupe and Steve Bryson.
