Jeffries, my great, great grandfather, was born in 1806 in Greene County, Georgia, married my great, great grandmother Elizabeth Reeves on August 30, 1855 in Jasper County, Georgia and died about 1855 in Jasper County. Elizabeth was born on October 2, 1806, died on May 28, 1892 in Jasper County and was buried in the Tabneracle Church Cemeteery, which is located on the Newton/Jasper County Line, just south of Mansfield on the road to Monticello. Some information about their children are as follows: (a) Thomas D. Jeffries was born on October 9, 1825 and was buried in the Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery of Mansfield, Georgia; (b) Mary Jane (Jeffries) Simpson was born in 1827 in Jasper County, married John J. Simpson in 1849, and died after 1910; (c) Francis (?) Jeffries was born in 1830. (It is uncertain if she was the daughter of Burkett and Elizabeth, or the wife of Thomas D. Jeffries. She and Thomas were both living in Burkett’s household for the 1850 census, and she was living there in the 1860 census. In the 1860 census there were two young Dunn children in the household also.) (d) Littleton Jeffries was born on Octoberr 8, 1832, married Letitia E.B. Mathias in Randolph County, Georgia on May 25, 1856, and died on January 9, 1909 in Dale County, Alabama; (e) Leroy Jeffries was born in 1834, married Mary Jane Henderson on July 29, 1852, and died in Marion County, Alabama between 1860-1870 (probably in the War Between The States, while he was in the 5th Alabama Calvary); (f) Nancy Elizabeth “Eliza” (Jeffries) Tuggle was born in 1836, married a cousin Leroy Tuggle on January 31, 1858, who died in the Confederate Armed Forces, and she died on 1927 and is buried in the Tabneracle Cemetery also; (g) Emily (Jeffries) Evans was born on July 9, 1837, married Asbury Young Evans on April 25, 1859, and died about 1903; (h) Elizabeth Louisa (Jeffries) Henderson was born in 1840, married David Henderson on June 22, 1862 and after his death married his brother Charles Henderson, and Elizabeth Louisa died on March 4, 1895, (i) Melissa Lee (Jeffries) was born on August 16, 1843, married Joseph Henderson, and died on June 13, 1917 and she also was buried in the Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery of Mansfield, Georgia; (j) Elizabeth “Mitt” (Jeffries) Doster, my great grandmother, was born in 1844, married John Wilson Doster in 1876, and died on June 14, 1927 and was buried in the Doster Family Cemetery Plot of the Porterdale City Cemetery in Porterdale of Newton County; and (k) James Peyton Jeffries was born on December 4, 1846, married Susan Little on September 2, 1871, and died on September 17, 1930 and they are both buried in the Tabernacle Church Cemetery. (The only Jeffries’ family Bible I have heard about is one his family kept, but it does not have any earlier family records in it.) The 1830 Jasper County Census shows Burkett and Elizabeth (Reeves) Jeffries were both 20-30 years old. They had one son and two daughters 0-5 years old. In 1832 Burkett applied for the Cobb County Land Lottery. He lived in Kelly’s District of Jasper County. Nothing has been discovered yet as to what happened to that land, but he sold land twice in less than ten years after this lottery date. These records are as follows: (1) The Randolph County Sheriff’s Sale on the first Tuesday in February 1840 sold at the courthouse in Cuthbert the property of Burkett Jeffries to satisfy executors of Edward Montgomery’s estate for fi fa. (2) The Randolph County Sheriff’s Sale on the first Tuesday in May 1840 offered for sale four lots in the city of Cuthbert levied on the property belonging to Burkett Jeffries to satisfy the execution of a fi fa to Edward Montgomery. (I believe Burkett may have exchanged his property in Cobb County to someone for their land in Randolph County. I have never seen any evidence that he ever lived in either county.) In the 1840 Jasper County Census Burkett and Elizabeth were both listed as 30-40 years old. In their household they had a son and a daughter 10- 15, two sons and a daughter 5-10, and three daughters 0-5 years old.
