Whereby the said Gatewwod Dunn hath promised to pay the said Joel Sturdivant or ----the said---- before mentioned by the 25th of December next ensuing the date hereof, for value received. Now for and in consideration of the sum of five dollars by the said Joel Sturdivant, to the said Gatewood Dunn in hand paid, the receipt hereof is hereby acknowledged as well as for the better securing the payment of the aforesaid promissory notes, the said Gatewood Dunn hath granted, bargained , and sold and doth by these presence grant bargain and sell unto the said Joel Sturdivant, his heirs and assigns, a certain negro or malatto boy, a slave about 15 years old named Peter. To have and to hold, said bargained slave to the said Joel Sturdivant, his heirs and assigns, to their own proper use, benefit and behoof forever and the said Gatewood Dunn for himself, his heirs, executors and administrators the said bargained negro unto the said Joel Sturdivant, will warrant and forever defend against the claim of all those persons whatsoever , provided nevertheless that if the said Gatewood Dunn, his heirs executors and administrators shall and so well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said Joel Sturdivant his heirs and assigns the aforesaid sum of money on the way and from time mentioned , according to the tenor or the said note, then and from therefourth as well as present indenture, and the right thereby conveyed as said promissory notes shall cease ------ mine and be void, to all intents and purposes. In testimony whereof, the said Gatewood Dunn hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day and year above mentioned.
