The young man said that just before taking the train Wednesday for Covington, he was told that Mr. Crawford Kelley, a well known citizen had been brutally murdered by a negro soon after running away. It seems that Mr. Kelley employs some convicts, and on Monday paid a Negro’s fine, the negro soon after running away. Mr. Kelley started bloodhounds on the Negro’s trail, and then mounted his horse and I followed with the intention of bringing the fugitive back. This is reported to have occurred Monday morning, and up to Wednesday noon neither man nor horse had been seen, although the dogs had returned. A searching party then started out, and it is said they found the body of Kelley some miles in the country in a terribly mutilated condition. It is supposed he was shot by the negro, and the horse then used by the fiend to make his escape. All of Jasper is in a fever of excitement, and if the crime was committed, as the young man says, watch out for a session of Judge Lynch’s court in Jasper soon.
