She has been growing weaker every day since the fated night, so we are informed by reliable citizens from the community, and those best acquainted with her condition think it impossible for her to recover. Mrs. Cunnard is a very stout woman, weighing about 250 pounds and has been very active all her life. when the mob attacked the elders she followed and attacked one of the men. She grabbed him by the coat collar, and with one hand grasped the gun in the hands of the man. A fierce struggle ensued. She was bent on finding out the name of the masked man, and would have done so, had not the gun gone off, and tore her jaw off. This frightened the mob so badly that they turned the elders a loose, a few hundred yards from the house, and told them to “burn the wind, and never put their appearance in the community again.” The Mormons were badly frightened and assert that they would have been lynched had Mrs. Cunnard not been shot. They stoutly assert that they will do no more missionary work in Jasper.
