The death of Rev. Wm. W. Steagall last Friday morning at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Joseph E. Dent, was an event of marked interest in this community. Born June 25, 1804, probably in Jasper county, he began preaching at twenty years of age. Coming to Coweta in 1827, he remained three years and moved to Florida. After two or three years he returned and rode this circuit for a number of years. In 1833 he married Miss Ann Wood of Heard county, and in 1836, located and settled in that county, since which time his health failed and he ceased the active duties of the ministry. At the close of the war he moved to Newnan where he remained until his death. His wife died in 1876 and of his three daughter, Mrs. Melson and Mrs. Henry Orr died years ago and Mrs. J.E. Dent is the only surviving child though there are numerous grandchildren. Father Steagall was very useful as a pioneer Methodist minister in this section of the State and the present proud position of Methodism here owes much of his fostering care in the early days. He built the first church ever erected in Newnan. It was made out of poles. A man of God revered by all, he leaves the savor of a good name as the richest heritage to posterity. The funeral services were conducted by the pastor on Saturday Morning at the residence and the love remains were laid away in the presence of a large concourse of friends and neighbors. The richest earthly blessing we can ask for those left behind is, that his life may be their pattern.
