Rea & Family Please Note: The following information is presented by Jennifer Stone & The Late Mr. Clyde David Rea & wife Barbara Rea. The Rea family of Georgia The Rea family of Georgia Starts with David H. Rea who was born in 1810 in Mecklenburg, North Carolina. David H. Rea married Charlotte Sheppard on November 14, 1836, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was native to North Carolina, but lived most of his life in Georgia. Charlotte and David H. Rea had Three sons WC Rea, David A. Rea born 1844, and James S. Rea. David and Charlotte lived in Mecklenburg until after their children were born. His first appearance in GA was in the 1850 Census of Henry County. Other son W.C. Rea I have no information on him except the 1850 census of Henry County. Charlotte died after the 1870 census. David H. Rea worked as a harness maker. In the 1860 Census David H and his kids lived with Sarah Rea who was 47 years old in Jonesboro, Clayton County, GA. James S. Rea enlisted as a private on May 20, 1861. He enlisted in Company E, 10th Infantry Regiment Georgia. They were also known as the Clayton County Sharp Shooters. James S. Rea did not make it home as he died at Cramptons Gap, MD. on September 14, 1862. David A Rea enlisted as a private on July 9, 1861. He enlisted in Company E, 10th Infantry Regiment Georgia. The Clayton County Sharp Shooters. Same as his brother. David was captured at mine run VA on May 6th, 1864. He was transferred on Aug 10th 1864 to Elmira, NY according to the Roll of Prisoners at Point Lookout, MD. He was released from NY on June 21, 1865, he walked all the way home to Georgia. When David Rea Returned to Jonesboro, he too, began making harnesses. Note:Look up Elmira Prison from Civil War to learn conditions in which David Rea lived during time captured. 1866 David H. & David A Rea were making harnesses in Jonesboro Tax Census. On October 7, 1875 David H. Rea remarried Elizabeth McCord. David H Rea resided in Jonesboro, Clayton County, Georgia until his death in September 1979, he passed away from Jaundice, and was a residence of Clayton County for 30ty years according to 1880 Mortality schedule. After the death of David H. Rea his son David A Rea was living in the house with Elizabeth & Liley Garete Rea, Liley was 15 years old. In reference to the 1880 Census. After that, David A. Rea was a member of The Knights of the Golden Rule in 1882 Jonesboro, Ga. David A. Rea married Mary E. Wilson on July 24, 1892 in Jasper County, GA. David A. Rea first son Walter H. Rea was born 1881 and then in 1888, Claude Gordon Rea was born. They lived in Monticello, Jasper County, GA in the 1900 Census as Head of house & manager of Pauper Farm (AKA poorhouse) David A. Rea lived with wife Mary and two sons Walter H. Rea & Claude Gordon Rea. They lived in the house with 11 inmates. He was believed to be a US Marshall and Deputy Sheriff. 1901 David A Rea was granted permission by Jasper County to pedal harnesses. 1910 the Rea family had moved to Wilcox, Ga. After this point Mary Rea was not mentioned any more and she is not buried with David A. Rea in the Union Springs Cemetary, Hazlehurst GA. She died between 1910 & 1920. The Rea family moved to Denton, Jeff Davis County, GA and are there in the 1920 Census. Both sons and their wives along with father David A. Rea. David A. Rea died January 22, 1923, Jeff Davis County. Claude Gordon Rea was married to Alma Warren, she died young of kidney failure. He Married Synthia Garner. Together they had 5 Children, Clyde David Rea, Claude Walter Rea, Kirby W. Rea, daughter Lillie Rea & Infant girl. Synthia Garner Rea also died young, from cancer. She left behind four little children & Mr. Claude Gordon Rea to raise them alone. Claude Gordon Rea was a member of the Jeff Davis County board of Education and a farmer. Claude Gordon Rea died in 1959. The Rea Family has continued to grow in Jeff Davis County. David A. Rea & Walter H. Rea are buried in the Union Springs Cemetary, in Jeff Davis County.
