(Jim) Carroll williamcarrollj@bellsouth.net April 4, 2009, 9:10 am The Jeff Davis Ledger 2-27-1958 Seventeen-Year-Old Youth Blows Off Father's Head Arthur Rowland, 17, using a shotgun, practically blew off his father's head with a load of shot fired at close range about 6pm on Washington's Birthday. The elder man, James Newson Rowland, 60. never knew what hit him as he sat on the doorstep of his home in Hallspur. The youth, now in jail, is charged with murder. He told Sheriff Hatton that his father had beaten him, was still threatening him and he thought would kill him. He declared the elder man had said he "would kill the _______ if its the last thing I do." According to the boy, J. N. Rowland had come up behind him as he cut wood and struck him several times. The blast was delivered somewhat from a side position and caught the father in the right ear. According to young Rowland's statement, he ran away "down the lane" and when he returned, he saw his father on the doorstep. He told officers he then went into the house through the back door, got the shotgun, and came outside to fire the fatal shot. The youth, who told officers the elder Rowland had beaten him before, said that his father was still cursing when the shotgun went off. Funeral services for Rowland were held Sunday at 2PM at Grace Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Bob Davis. Burial was in Hazlehurst Cemetery.
