Mary was the daughter of Blassingame and Drucilla (Paulett) Harvey of Burke County, Georgia. Their first known child was named Eliza/Elizabeth Key, born 23 October 1784 [Bostic Family Bible] in probably Burke County, Georgia. Elizabeth married Robert Atkinson about 1800-1801, the actual date of marriage is unknown. Elizabeth is 17 when her father dies. She does not have a guardian, only child not to and so we believe any property she might have received from her father was already given at the time of her marriage. Elizabeth and Robert lived in Burke County, Georgia where no land records survived fires. Elizabeth, in 1804, received two slaves from her father's estate. That same year Elizabeth and Robert became parents to daughter Margaret Atkinson. Margaret's year date of birth is speculation based on little legal data. On the 2nd of July 1812 Elizabeth and Robert become parents to Robert A. L. Atkinson.[RAL's obit] In 1815 Elizabeth is listed with her children on the Tax Digest. The property is in Burke Co, and listed on the Jefferson County tax digest book at the probate court in Louisville. The property is listed as 99 ¼ acres and appears to be from an estate. We believe from records that Elizabeth is now widowed. We have no information on Robert Atkinson except his name and that he died. The source of this information: Franklin Co., [TN], Chaucery Court Book 1, p. 36; 26 July 1834: “Bostick's statement: He married the mother of his co-defendant (Atkinson) in the year of 1816 and was appointed guardian of R.A.L. Atkinson. In the year 1827 he removed to this state from Georgia, where said ward, then a minor, lived. The ward was entitled to ¼ part of a family of negroes. (Part of the personal property which Bostick is charged to have sold to him.) In 1832 Atkinson came from Georgia, and demanded a settlement. Oct. 1833 Bostick went on a business trip to the city of Washington. About then they settled on selling the slaves in question to Atkinson as a settlement for the guardianship of Sr. Atkinson's Estate. 14 June 1834. Robert A.L. Atkinson answered: Bostick his step-father, having intermarried with his widowed mother in 1816. His father Robert Atkinson died in 18__(unreadable) intestate in Georgia. Considerable estate, leaving widow, Robert A. L., and sisters, one of whom has since died, etc.” In 1815, both Mary Key (mother) and Eliza Atkinson are named as guardian for Miss Naomi Key. This date of 1815 is when the motion was recorded, it took place earlier since Naomi married in 1815. On the 21st of August 1816 Elizabeth and John G. Bostick are married [marriage license] and that year John G. Bostick is given guardianship of Margaret and Robert A.L. Atkinson. [Jefferson Co., Probate Court records] In 1827 John and Mary Bostick moved with their family to Tennessee. John became a hotel keeper and quite prosperous. John died bef. 8 May 1857 in Memphis, Shelby Co., Tn. Elizabeth died aft. 1 June 1860 in Memphis, Shelby Co., TN. Their children: Margaret Atkinson, Robert A.L. Atkinson, Mary Matilda Bostick, Eliza Bostick, Tandy Clarke Key Bostick, Albert Gallatin Bostick, and John Henry Rice Bostick. Mary and Tandy Clarke Key's 2nd known child is Mary E. Key. We believe she was born about 1791 in Burke County, Georgia. Her birth date is based on Guardianship papers stating in 1806 she is over the age of 14 and the 1850 census listing her as being 58 years of age. Mary, also called Polly, is listed first on the guardianship papers indicating she may be the oldest between she and her brother Henry. Mary never married, but research shows she had a family of “orphaned children from family members”living with her. Her sister, Naomi's daughter, Amanda Malvina's obit states she was raised by an aunt in Jefferson County, Ga. after the death of her parents. Research strongly suggest that Mary was the aunt who raised Amanda. The Tax Digest in the Probate Court at Louisville list Mary E. Key in 1820/1821 had 110 ½ acres on the Ogeechee Waterway, her neighbor was Bostick and she had 1 slave. This is probably the land she inherited from her father. Mary also appears on the 1840 and 1850 Jefferson County, Georgia census. In 1853 a document found at the Georgia Department of Archives and History showing Mary E. Key and Amanda M. Neely as guardians/trustees of Amanda and Hugh I. Neely's children, Mary J., Amanda A. and Robert H. Neely. Hugh Neely had died. What is interesting is Amanda was living in Griffin, Spalding Co., Ga. at the time of her husband's death, yet guardianship was given Mary E. Key who lived in Louisville, Jefferson County, Georgia. In 1857 the Tax Digest at the Probate Court in Louisville indicates that Mary has sold her inherited land and moved into town. Mary is listed on the 1858 Tax Digest but not the 1859 or 1860. From this we assume she died in 1858. On July 16, 1860 John M. Hayles made application for Letters of Administration on the Estate of Mary Key. [Jefferson County Probate Records] Tandy Clarke and Mary Key's third known child is Henry Key, born about 1792 in Burke County, Georgia. The connection between Henry Key and his parents cannot be verified by any specific record other than the guardianship papers found at the probate court in Jefferson County, Ga. However, the circumstantial evidence is very strong that this Henry Key is the son of Tandy C. Key and wife Mary Harvey. Henry married Sarah Elizabeth Paulett 24 March 1813 in Jefferson County, Georgia [copy marriage license] Sarah was the daughter of John Paulette and Sarah Harvey. Henry and Sarah have two known children, Louisa Jane Key, born abt. 1816 and Henry Key, Jr. born bet. 1825 and 1830. Records indicate that Sarah died after the birth of her son Henry, Jr. Henry disappears from Jefferson county, Ga. His death is unknown. Tandy and Mary's 4th known child is William Key, born abt. 1794 in Burke County, Georgia. William married Margaret Atkinson and died before December 1836 in Burke County, Georgia. Their children, Tandy Key born aft. 1821 died bet. 1836 and 1840 in probably Burke County, Georgia. Their daughter Mary Emma, born abt. 1823 in Burke County, Georgia, married Gilbert Christopher Carmichael 19 November 1844 in the home of H. I. Neely [Hugh Neely and Amanda Key Neely]in Lanier, Pike Co., Ga. Mary Emma died 1 September 1891 in Montezuma, Macon Co., Ga. Tandy and Mary's 5th known child is John Key born abt. 1796 in Jefferson County, Ga. He died in his youth. Thomas Homer Key was Tandy and Mary's youngest son. He was born about 1798 in Jefferson County, Georgia, and died between March 1848 and 1850 in Dooly County, Ga. (unconfirmed death date of 1 Jan 1850). He married (1) Mary Nelms Hargrove and (2) Clarissa Ward. Thomas was a farmer in Dooly county and in 1837 a senator from Dooly County. Thomas and Mary's children: Pleasant Hargrove Key and Mary Key; his children with Clarissa Ward: Homer Milton Key; Eliza Virginia Key; Samantha Key; Sarah Key; Caroline Frances Key; and Georgia Ann Key. Tandy and Mary's youngest child Alice Naomi, was born 23 December 1800 [Bible record] in Jefferson County, Georgia. She died 3 August 1825 [Bible record], place unknown. She married her first cousin, Samuel Key, son of William and Sarah (Gibson) Key. Their only known child: Amanda Malvina Key. After marriage Samuel and Naomi Key moved to Clarke County, Alabama. [proven by probate records at the Alabama Archives – original records] Samuel took after his father and was the owner of a tavern in Suggsville, Clarke County, Alabama, where his daughter was born. Their daughter Amanda's obit from the Griffin Weekly News and Sun, dated December 6, 1895 states “Her parents died when she was young and she then went to live with an aunt in Louisville, Ga.” The records from the probate court indicate that Samuel left the Suggsville area but no mention of where he went. We do not know where he and Naomi died or when they died. Note: I have been fortunate to have made contact with a direct descendant of each one of Tandy Clarke Key's married children/grandchildren. My own line is that of Naomi Key, the youngest child. The sharing of information has given the descendants a great deal of information on the surviving lines.
