Lyon Commissioners of Washington and Jefferson Counties Page 50 The following is a part of the journal of the record of Commissioners of Washington and Jefferson Counties in relation to the above bridge. The undertaker to build the bridge over the lagoon and also to keep up the bridge and cross the river or channel and join the same & cross pond with it in size and quality of the timbers width height & of said bridge floor & railing in short to be inferior in no part to the part of said bridge over the channel. The undertaker required to put in a new arch in the middle at the river or a new one on each side of that of the old one now standing. The bridge to be built shall extend from the part now standing to the extreme end of the abutment of the old bridge. Payment one half when the work is received and the balance in two equal annual installments and the undertaker to keep said bridge in good repair for the space of seven years next to come after the reception of said bridge as well the part over the main channel of the river as across the lagoon. The said Steel giving bond and security for the faithful compliance of his contract which was accordingly done by him when said bridge was completed by said Steel on the 31st October 1838 and examined by the commissioners & received.
