                             February  20, 1892 
W.L. Phillips, Esq. Is  sick  with  grippe. Mr. Hall
lost  one  of  his  fine  colts  this  week . It  took
sick  on  the  way  from  Kentucky. Mr. Phillip  B.
Jordan died  the 5th inst. after  a  lingering  illness.
He  was  in  his  23d year. We  hear  that  Mrs . Fay
and Miss  Annie Greer  will  open  up  a  millinery store
at  an  early  date. W.L.Phillips  , who  has  held  the 
office  of  county  admisintrator for  the  past ten
years , has  resigned. The  fair  will  be  held next
fall  as  usual . The premium list  will  be  ready  for 
distribution in  a  short time. Commissioner of
Agriculture R.T. Nesbit , will  address  the  people  of
Jefferson County at  the  court house February 19th.
Married February  9th, at  the  residence  of  the  bride
's  father , Mr. H.E. Smith , Miss Kate M. Smith  to
Mr.C Whitehurst  of  Gordon. Rev. Thos. Pilcher
officiated. The "Soldier  Of Fortune " presented  by  the
Louisville Amateur  Dramatic Club  ,  was  a  splendid
success.The  door  receipts  amounted  to  $55 . They
will  play  before a  Wadley  Audience on  the night  of 
the  12th. To  the  question , Which  is  your  favorite 
poem? there  may  be  a  great  variety  of  answers ;
but  when  asked , Which  is  your  favorite blood
purifier ? there  could  only  be  one  reply --  Ayer's
Sarsparilla , because  it's  the purest , safest and
most  economical .

The time  to  elect  a new  mayor  and council  is  near 
at  hand. 

Miss  F.C. McCroan  , of  Midville , has  been 
visiting  Mrs. Z.A. Brown  of  this  place. Mr. Lindsey
Kirkland , of Waycross , visited  the  family  of  Capt.
W.J.Bell , of  this  place , last  week. Mr. James
Sheppard  , Of Burke county , spent  a few  days recently
with  his  brothers  and  sisters  here. 

Some  of  our
people  are  betting  on  cotton  futures . Two  of  our
prominent  citizens  are staking  money  on  cotton
selling  at  10  cents  next  fall. Gentlemen who
attended  the  sale  of  the perishable  property  at
the Hardy  Hall place  report  money  plentiful  and  the
articles sold  bought  good  prices.
