J.T. Duke , the defendant did not deny police recital of his habitual drunkenness and his practice of pawning properties of his mother and father. He did however deny that he was a vagrant. For years he had worked near Alma and had come to Savannah because of the illness of his mother. He said he would have already returned there but for her condition and request that he stay here. He said the two weeks he remained here before getting drunk was about as long as he could make it. The father did not testify but was quoted by police. He was in the city court room as Judge B.B.Heery pronouced sentence. However he quickly made his way to the prisoner's bench as his son returned..Then he left, returning to bid his son goodbye and give him the little money he had . "I guess" he sighed " they can keep him sober for a little while anyway". The case was heard by Judge Heery during his weekly non-criminal sessions .
