Leroy Stapleton, 67, of S. College Street, Metter, Georgia, died Thursday, October 11 in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta after a long illness. He was a native of Jefferson County, Stapleton, Ga., and a son of the late Albert Sidney and Margaret Jones Stapleton. Mr. Stapleton was graduated in 1939 from the University of Georgia with a B. S. degree in Agriculture. He taught school in Ochlocknee, Ga. He was in the Air Force for 4 years and was a Veteran's Agriculture Training Teacher. He was a prominent farmer in Candler County; a member of the Metter Masonic Lodge and secretary of the Candler County Hospital Authority for 25 years. Mr. Stapleton was chairman of the board of directors of the Stapleton Banking Company, president of Farm Bureau, past Commander of Candler County American Legion Post No. 108, deacon and Sunday School teacher and member of Metter First Baptist Church. He was also chairman of the Candler County Draft Board at one time. Surviving Mr. Stapleton are his wife, Mrs. Sue Nell Jones Stapleton of Metter; two daughters, Mrs. Jan S. Simmons, Boston, Georgia and Dr. Fay S. Burnett of Greensboro, Ga.; one granddaughter; and one brother, Dr. James W. Stapleton of Dublin, Ga. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 3 p. m. from the Metter Primitive Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael A. Guido officiating, assisted by the Revs. Charles White , Douglas Schriner and James Bland. Burial was in the Upper Lotts Creek Church Cemetery. Hook Mortuary of Metter was in charge of arrangements.
