The church changed names from Mt. Carmel to Paynes Chapel. It was named after Lewis B Payne who was the Circuit Rider for the area. Once Robert M Williams died on 12-31-1876 he was buried on the church grounds and is thought to be the first person buried in the cemetery. There are well over 500 people buried in this cemetery. There are pioneers of the surrounding counties, veterans who fought in different wars and a lot of history. I don't know much about Payne's Chapel, but am trying to learn, so I am glad you are doing this. My husband descends from Rev Robert Mack Williams thru his daughter Martha Sarah Williams b 1838who married Andrew Dutton b 1829. Robert Mack and his wife Martha Gay Williams are buried at Payne's Chapel as is their daughter Martha Williams Dutton. Andrew may be there in an unmarked grave also. Andrew and Martha Dutton were the parents of Sarah Vidella Dutton b about 1860 who married William Thomas Miller b 1852, d 1883, who is buried there also, along with two of his sons, William Oza and Julian Sinclair Miller. My husband's grandfather was Dr Clifford Miller of Portal Ga. I have been trying to research the Miller line, and have traced William Thomas back to A.L. Miller b abt 1810 Tn, probably Monroe Co, and Priscilla Harris b 1816 Monroe Co Tn. I am having difficulty getting any further back with this line and would appreciate any help. I think all of the Millers buried at Payne's Chapel are related. I have also been working on the Dutton line, and have some on the Robert Mack Williams line. There are other members of all three families who are buried at Payne's Chapel. I do have Family Tree Maker, and would love to see what you have on these families. You can e-mail me at cmiller20@comcast.net.
