The Methodist Church was established in 1784 and Jones Church was named in honor of Drury and Nancy Jones. In 1806 the church moved to Skull's Creek. Not much is known about this site. In 1831 the name was changed to Mt. Carmel which is seen in the Quarterly Conferance notes. On April 9, 1870 the Second quarterly Meeting for Statesboro & Bryan was held at Mt. Carmel. It lists PC as R. M. Williams Sr  and LP as R.M Williams Jr. Paynes Chapel Church was started at its present site around 1870. On November 2, 1870 Charles A. Rowland "for and consideration of the love I bear for the course of Christ....convey unto the trustees of Mt. Carmel Church 3 9/10 acres of land for the use and benefit of said church".  (Bulloch County, Ga Warranty Deed filed Sept. 29,1902) The Board of Trustees appointed were Robert M Williams (LP), Mitchel Williams, Berry A Williams, Matthew Williams and Joseph Dutton. (Quarterly Meeting for Altamaha Circuit July 1871 held at Union Church) The first Sunday School was recorded on March 23, 1872 a couple of months later Remer Williams was elected as the Superintendent of Sunday Schools. On August 21, 1875 It was ordered by the conferance that Mr. Carmel be dis-continued. Than on March 13, 1917 a deed was given to Paynes Chapel by L.J. Belt for 3 9/10 acres for as long as the land was used for burial purposes. This deed was with the trustees of Paynes Chapel L.P Dutton, R.G Saunders and J.M Waters. It is not known why this second deed was done for the present location of the church.
